That's because it IS an La-9 wink

Formerly G-BWUD and bought from China by The Old Flying Machine Company in the mid 1990s. It initially came to Duxford, but was shipped to New Zealand for restoration, flying again around 2003. Ray Hanna was heavily involved in getting it back into the air. I believe it has appeared in UK/Europe since, possibly at a "Flying Legends" Duxford airshow.

It had served in the Soviet and Chinese air forces, before being retired to Beijing University, from where it was purchased. It was then owned/operated by the (now defunct) New Zealand Fighter Pilot's Museum and displayed at Wanaka. I believe it now belongs to Jerry Yagen's collection, but I'm not sure about it's flight status (possibly static/in storage). Currently registered in the US as N415ML... http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/N415ML.html

Edit to add... Original Lavochkin construction number was 828

And a link to the Wikipedia entry for the museum... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Aviation_Mus...

Suspect it/they is/are on the engineer's panels just to the right and out of frame.

The X-56A Multi-Utility Technology Testbed (MUTT) is greeted on an Edwards Air Force Base runway by a U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) team member. NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center and the AFRL, along with participants from Langley Research Center and Glenn Research Center, and support from Lockheed Martin, are using the second X-56A (dubbed “Buckeye”) to check out aircraft systems, evaluate handling qualities, characterize and expand the airplane’s performance envelope, and verify pre-flight predictions regarding aircraft behavior. The 20-minute flight marked the beginning of a research effort designed to yield significant advances in aeroservoelastic technology using a low-cost, modular, remotely piloted aerial vehicle. Probably low pressure condensation rather than shock waves by the looks of it.
