Ironic that a lot of the hardcore used to build the M55 came from digging up the runways at nearby RNAS Inskip "40 years ago today our Jaguar landed on the M55 in Lancashire, to demonstrate its ability to land in tight spots."

How many times did they close the Motorways to test the concept?
That seems to be two times at least
The M55 was still being built when it was done. They were just about to build the last bridge on the straightest bit so the opportunity was there to do a bit of showing off. That seems to be two times at least
I think it was around this stretch - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.80254,-2.928171,...

Jags regularly operated off the Autobahnen during TACEVALS in RAFG.Is this a coincidence or were their plans in place to use roads as runways if it all went tits up?

Yes - other photos of the event show the bridge over which it went which is recognisable as the B5260 from WeetonI think it was around this stretch - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.80254,-2.928171,...

Good old TACEVALS. Those were the days, eh?
If you mean having to be suited up in AR5 (the Aircrew NBC equipment) then NO, they were days I would rather forget!Still I look at it this way
We're still alive to moan about it
Re: the Jags OFF motorways issue, I was looking at the first and second pictures. Empty pylons on the first one and quite a half decent war load on the second.
