No need Tootles - it's just that I am old enough to remember the competition and I have always liked the A-10.
In all honesty I get the impression that the only people who don't like the A10 are the generals who were likely to miss out on industry kickbacks/sinecures because the 'hog did everything it said on the tin and was (relatively) cheap
And the fast-jet mafia who are currently trying to kill it off frown
From memory they performed many tasks in Iraq GW 1 and GW 2 better than some of the newer kit which extended their operational life - would really love to buy one if a big EuroMillions win came in.

From an airshow at the weekend. That Bleriot is the oldest airworthy aircraft in the USA.

Damned tricky subject to shoot (as I suspect some Pakistani Sabre pilots discovered).

Ah, bits of structure and sheet metal I'm intimately aquainted with! Not much in that photo I've not had apart and replaced at some point!

I used to pull them to pieces, and put new bits back in after you lot broke them.

What was the cost and man hours to keep them polished up when they were bare alloy, though?
It saves fuel, but you have to wash them more, polish, and still paint it. So it is not seen as a cost saving in reality.
I used to work on American Airlines MD-11's and various Tristars that were polished. They were only polished when they came in for 'D' checks, so not much more in the way of maintenance.
An American Trans Air Tristar captain told me they saved 3 tons of fuel on a transatlantic crossing after the aircraft was polished.
A neighbor of mine has a patented coating that is applied to many commercial jets saving washing and polishing. I know Qantas use it and he's currently pushing it in the U.S. He did tell similar facts that you've just quoted.
I have a small amount of it on my jetskis, it's two years old now and still beading very nicely when wet!
