Always liked boats, quite fancied my own. Then a friend asked me if I'd like to help do some maintenance on this:
Now I really want my own
The one above will be back in the water once several layers of epoxy are on (and the obligatory antifoul), and then I'll be taught how to sail her - quite frankly I can't wait!

Old boat, Shakespeare 14 complete with home made wakeboard tower (worked a treat by the way).
New boat, Phantom 16. Just got it on the water and really pleased with it. Swapped the engine etc over from the Shakespear, pulls a steady 35mph which I think is pretty good for a 60hp - comes up on the plane much quicker than the Shakespeare as well! Any other phantom owners out there?

Used to race a P16 with a 115 Suzuki and then went for a P18 with Merc 200. 40+ year old design by Steve Baker that still out performs most other boats out there. Now get that engine on Ebay and find yourself an XR2 to stick on it and scare yourself silly as they're designed for. [

Average 40 knots Putney to Ramsgate with an old 80 on the back!

...the difference in colour between the two is like black and white Mariner 75 on the back with a Mercury casing.

How long have you had yours? I'm really impressed with how the boat goes and handles, plus it's got a lot more room in it than the Shakespeare! Hoping to get it out again at the weekend weather permitting!

Quality article that, shows how a good design can stand the test of time! An XR2 would be nice, but a dream to be honest. For what the boat is used for, and the money the hull cost, the 60hp kicks it along just fine - although I might do a bit of prop research http://www.powerboatarchive.co.uk/Magazines/1970s/...

The Avenger that made it back was of course a Don Shead design and it has always been said he only had one design just made it longer for Sunseeker / Plancraft / Revenger etc. Him and Steve Baker are two legends of british powerboat design that not only designed but raced successfully as well with people even today copying their designs.rowey200 said:

I have had mine for about 3 years I think. I try to use it as much as I can every summer but I now have a young son so its not so easy to find the time. How long have you had yours? I also find the NE coast a bit boring really with no islands to visit, the west coast is more interesting. Its a cracking wee boat though, although could do with a bit of a freshen up now, new control cables etc.
What age is your one? I think mine is a 1983.

I'm really not sure what age the hull is, but I was thinking early 80's, but might even be a little older? It's just had a tidy up and a fresh coat of paint, so it is ready for a good season of use off the north devon coast I also find the NE coast a bit boring really with no islands to visit, the west coast is more interesting.
