£27 per litre seems pretty rich for a no-name.
ETA; £27 is the duty per litre we've just paid on the three casks bottled, are we sure a mistake hasn't been made?
Could have a point there - if that is the price paid for the ''carry outs'' then that is both the spirit, duties and vat - plus a possible small lot surcharge. ETA; £27 is the duty per litre we've just paid on the three casks bottled, are we sure a mistake hasn't been made?

Sorry, my mistake, we were £27 incl vat and duty for the BN, not excluding. The spirit was £3.26 net per litre.
Still waiting on their quotes, I'll chase them up again!
Is there any wonder petrol is so damn expensive - all them costings Still waiting on their quotes, I'll chase them up again!

Cask 1 was a sherry cask, new to us I guess, so presumable we were the first 'refill'. Casks 2 and 3 were both refill - but refilled from what originally? Cask 2 had a peated spirit and cask 3 had a non-peated spirit so that should make cask 2 have a peaty flavour but as they are both refills already, I guess any future maturation will take much longer (than the time spent so far!).
What's an RLA please lefty?
Oh, and Ben Nevis gets my vote! No point paying someone else for 8 years of maturation when we can do it ourselves!
And finally........Any news on cask 8 yet?

I ASked the same question.
Hi Iain,
Sorry I should have explained.
When a cask is filled, you have the bulk i.e. 200 bulk litres @ 63.5% vol = 127 Original Litres of Alcohol (200 x 0.635)
Alcohol evaporates about 2% per annum. This is a rough guide only though used to estimate how much may remain in a cask.
If you are buying a cask less than 5 years, you will most likely buy in OLAs. This means you know what the cask was filled at and it should have 2% less per annum for every year. If you were buying a cask that was ten years old, you would not like to take the risk to buy in OLAs and so would get this cask regauged. This is the process of ascertaining the remaining bulk, strength and L/alc by emptying the cask – weighing the contents and using a hydrometer to assess the strength. Buying in RLA, you can be sure of what you are buying at that point in time and it can let you know if the cask has leaked.
The price in RLA will be more than if you were to buy the same cask in OLA (note, you can only have one or the other – once it’s been regauged those figures are updated from then on and the OLAs are no longer relevant) because it’s less of a risk. Remember, any liquid you lose under bond you will never get back from a supplier. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get unlucky. We have paid for casks only to find out they were later empty! Not our suppliers fault, not the warehouses fault – just bad luck.
I hope this has been helpful.
Kind regards,
Jane

Looking for suggestions for my OH's birthday. Always buy him a single malt on birthdays/xmas etc but stuck for ideas. So far he's had Talisker, Laphroig, Jura, Glenlivet, Haig Club, Balvennie Caribbean Cask and most recently Glenfiddich IPA. Budget around £50.
Ask here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... or start a new thread, this one is about PHers who have bought(some time ago) into a cask of whisky. (Unless you want to buy in to the new one)

Apologies for posting in the wrong thread! However I could be interested in buying into the new cask... (Unless you want to buy in to the new one)
