Pistonheads whisky cask
Discussion
When we were there with Lefty in August, we had a good chat with them.
Basically, it's a cashflow exercise for a distillery after a period of inactivity. Now, with things going well and investment from BenRiach it's not viable and a big overhead. It's just not going to happen.
Lefty land I ooked around, and to find octaves at the moment just isn't happening. If you want to stump up £3k+ for a hogshead there are a few abou - but that's a huge undertaking and easily a decade or more.

This.Would be great to end up with a few choices after not picking up on the thread early enough.
Bottling charges and labelling are the unknowns. Which brings me neatly to that very subject. If we can agree to bottle now I'll pop up to the distillery and see what are options are for bottling/labels/boxes etc, get a price and a delivery date.
Now that the distillery has been sold, i dont think they are bottling on-site anymore which is a shame because we could have done it (or at least started it) ourselves.

Indeed. The Octaves are maturing very quickly but for investing in larger casks I firmly believe that going for a long maturation is important.Basically, it's a cashflow exercise for a distillery after a period of inactivity. I would love a sherry butt and keep it for >30 years as a retirement present...but that's a pretty hefty liability for duty and vat.

I think we can make a reasonable assesment of duty, it's around £27/litre of pure alcohol. But, yes, it does add up.

What's the expected evaporation over 3 years? You said approximately 10 litres after 7 years, so 5 after 3 maybe? So we're looking at around 4.5 litres each? Does the duty apply to that amount or to the alcohol content? If I'm reading it right then the worst cast is ~£120 of duty + bottling costs each? Not bad really.
