Its not a £100 for bottling though and that was my point, it will now cost £55 per 6 bottles = £495 for 54 bottles. Quite an increase from what was originally quoted (especially when not sharing the Octave)
No bottling is carried out the distillery and will be carried out at their plant in Edinburgh.
Have you spoken to them about it and why the extortionate amount of increase ? Extortionate is a good word to mention smile

I know I'll be taking it up with them when I get the letter; might even take it to social media since I follow their twitter account.

Definitely taking the piss.
It is a rather eyewatering increase; 300+% is a bit nippy. It might take consumption of a couple of bottles before the pain fades. hehe

I do wonder if GlenGlassaugh are trying to recoup some of the 10K's worth of whisky that was lifted from their visitor centre a couple of weeks ago. Lefty has your collection increased substantially recently ? smile

Can we simply not take our barrel (octave) elsewhere and bottle it ourselves? ie pay the duty in order for the distillery to release it to us and then shop around for better prices? Do we have to have it bottled via Glenglassaugh? According to the T&C's linked above, it says we can though there will be a charge for moving the octave (sounds reasonable as long as it's a reasonable charge and not 95% of what the bottling charge would be via the distillery!)

Spoke with a local whisky shop today and they have had a number of calls regarding bottling charges.
There are a few he said that could be tried but there may not be any cost saving.
Distillery manager hasn't returned my call today, as much as I suspected as the person at reception was a bit off yesterday when I had the discussion.

I get the impression that some of the higher cost is due to the requirement to ship the whisky to their bottling plant in Edinburgh whereas before the bottling was still being carried out at the Distillery.

Dont know the legality but T & C at purchase states - "8. The Cask price includes cost of transport to our own bottling facility"
I believe they should still stand good to this but maybe legaly they can change the T & C as they are a new owner.
Will get back in touch with them next week and ask for a breakdown on the cost as there is also reference to whisky management and I dont know what that could be within the bottling charge.

I got an email this morning. Haven't been home for four weeks so haven't received the letter.

'With regard to the recent letter sent to you, we have an amendment and some clarifications to make. We felt that email would be the quickest way to get in touch with you all.

The bottling price quoted in the letter of £55 per case of 6 bottles was incorrect (typo error). The bottling cost for 2014 is £25 per case of 6.'

So people complained it was 10 times the original estimate, so they come back and say "oops. It was a typo. Actually it is only double."

Evening chaps. Sorry, I've been working away for a few weeks and am now on holiday. My wife told me I have a pile of letters so I assume there's at least one from Portsoy there!

Will be back in touch ASAP regarding our casks. thumbup

Morning chaps,

Got back to work today after 3 weeks away and had an email from the distillery:

Dear Cask owners,

With regard to the recent letter sent to you, we have an amendment and some clarifications to make. We felt that email would be the quickest way to get in touch with you all.

The bottling price quoted in the letter of £55 per case of 6 bottles was incorrect (typo error). The bottling cost for 2014 is £25 per case of 6.

In response to some emails we have received, we apologise for the reduction in sampling frequency but HMRC have advised us that by law we must ensure that all duty unpaid samples are kept to an absolute minimum.

Some of you have also been enquiring about exporting your whisky. This can be done, but only after it has been bottled. The Scotch Whisky Regulations state that as of 2011, Single Malt Whisky can only be exported from Scotland in a bottle. If you wish to export your whisky under bond and pay the duty in another country, then this is possible if you have someone with the correct licence to receive under bond goods.

The following link will guide you to a document outlining the laws governing Scotch Whisky: http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/media/12744/scotch...

Please accept my sincere apologies for any distress or disappointment my mistake regarding bottling costs may have caused you.

Kind regards,

krallicious

Excellent. So who has tried some of the casks? I wonder how long it takes from Edinburgh to the distillery as I am up that way in August for a couple of days.

Hmmm. Just need to convince the other half that a 7 hour round trip to see some casks and have a tour will be worth it hehe

We're up in August as well, looking at booking a few places this week - and hopefully catching up with Lefty as well. smile
