Pistonheads whisky cask

Do we know roughly what the age is like relative to a regular malt? Some of ours are 5 now. Is that like a 10 year old cask, or is it completely unrelated?
If it's an octave then should be 50l. So it will be more mature compared to regular malts. I'm not sure if there's a direct comparison but from person experience I would say the 5yo might be something like a 8-9yo? That could be quite wrong, as although I have had quite a lot of experience with young whiskies matured in small casks (anything from 5l) they have been generally new distilleries and so I have not tasted the equivalent older aged whisky from the same place. So a lot might be due to the distillery not being so experienced (not such a refined product), or just variations in locations etc. I also think the type of cask makes a big difference on how enjoyable young whisky is. Stronger "flavour" casks (like sherry or if heavily charred for example) settle the whisky down a lot more than a simple bourbon cask, I guess since the bigger flavours hid any issues more). This could all be nonsense, but is just my experience. A lot of the younger whiskies I have had are Scandinavian, so they might be a little "younger" in taste due to the colder climate meaning there is not as much temperature changes and so less maturation for the same amount of time. If someone has compared the Glendronach Octaves bottle with their normal offerings that would be a better comparison.

You know I'm in if possible - but probably not available until sometime middle of next month - or into November. The Cotswolds beckon us very shortly, followed by holiday cover for colleagues.
Last time I headed that way was the day Bladnoch went t1ts up and we were turned away.
If we are planning on November - I'm in ! Last time I headed that way was the day Bladnoch went t1ts up and we were turned away.
It's got to be ready now hasn't it Iain ?

I drank both this and the peated one while back home in the summer. They both lasted around 4 days. If ours taste similar then we are in for a treat.TFatC said:
Is anything happening about a tasting? Summer is nearly over... :-(
Or to put it another way - there are only 94 bottling days to Xmas - and that's only if you work a 7 day week.PS - you would have been in your element at York 'Range' store last Saturday - stunning Saab 96 on a P plate ! I was equally happy with the superb 500SEC - but the Saab whipped its @rse !
I'm happy to go with a majority vote re bottling. I'm very aware that few have tasted the casks because of the changed terms at GLG so don't want to be making decisions that will affect all of us.
Ideally we'd visit whiskybroker, taste everything and decide there and then what to bottle and what to leave.
BUT, if everyone's sure about PPX1 then I'm also perfectly happy to ask WB for a quote. Let me know!
Cheers
