ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?

Currently trying the Aldi Nespresso rip off coffee capsules, not thrilling me so far but I've only tried the purple ones as yet.
Update - I've now tried all three of the caffeinated ones and can't really tell the difference between any of them. All come out too weak compared with the real thing and lack the smoothness I prefer. Crema is acceptable but the underlying coffee tastes diluted even at the smallest cup setting. They are a lot like the other generic capsules I've tried so if you are OK with them you might be OK with these, for me they still lag behind the real ones by some distance.

The one that is different is Kelloggs, absolutely will refuse to supply anything not under their brand. So if you want proper corn flakes or bran flakes it has to be Kelloggs.

The £2.99 wagyu burgers will be back at Aldi tomorrow - I'll be getting some
They were large and tasty when i tried them last time. Not cheap but worth a go.One tip - as they are pretty thick it helps to cook then in the oven, rather than frying/grilling.

Bought a bottle of Chablis (2013) at Lidl today for £7.99.
It is the best wine that I have had in a couple of years.

A steal.
I first bought it at <£6 in 2010 or so, and even though prices have crept up since then,
it's still the best Chablis for the price to be found anywhere.
It knocks all other supermarket offerings at <£15 into a cocked hat.

Well, it turns out that the mrs was absolutely right.
This is the toughest bit of gristle that I have ever tried to eat.
I've managed to slice it very thin, and it is still too tough to chew.
It's a pity, because I quite like the flavour.
I ended up frying it and making a bacon sandwich. This was quite good.
It cost about the same as 10 packs of dry-cure bacon, but weighs the same as 30 packs. So, it is not a complete disaster. There is also the chance that other parts of the leg might be more tender.
To be fair to the mrs, she is looking more sympathetic than smug.
We didn't buy one of these hams but tried a packet of thinly sliced same. This is the toughest bit of gristle that I have ever tried to eat.

Have to agree, don't care for it really.
On the other hand the Italian Prosciutto Cotto di Alta Qualita is absolutely bloody gorgeous.
I owe Lidl a big apology for my previous assessment of their jamon.
The first slices were like rubber, but now that I am a half inch in, I must say that it is bloody excellent.
The taste is very good (comparable to Iberico), and it is no longer "chewey".
My mrs is Spanish, and she mocked me when I bought this.
She has now given me permission to buy another one when this is finished.

Aldi Italian ham is excellent, infact I just had it for lunch on Aldi seeded bread, Aldi Mayo, along with Aldi cheese and onion Crisps Yummy
I've only managed to shop at Aldi once. Every other time that I have tried, the queues at the tills have been horrendous, so I haven't bothered.Steamer said:

Do not under any circumstances buy Aldi's equivalent of gold blend coffee. It is absolutely fowl and not even good enough to save for guests you don't like. Had 2 cups then entire jar went in bin, to be replaced by large jar of Douwe Egberts that was half price in village co-op.
was just going to post about coffee - I loved this one:But it seems to have gone in recent weeks - looked int various stores.
So I made do with their fair-trade one (its got a toucan on the label) - Also not bad for an instant.

Glad to hear it - the fair-trade coffee is okay, but not as good.

The checkout ops hurl the items through at warp speed, you lob them into the trolley and move to the packing shelf to bag the items.Even when the queues are long they move much faster than other supermarkets.
Tried some of the Lidl BBq range over the past few days Winners were the maple pork belly slices, hot chicken wings, and chilli chicken thighs; we thought the BBq drumsticks a bit dry and they shrunk when cooked too.
We love the two deluxe range fresh Quiches very nice indeed . Dont like the new deep crumpets though and the loss of the ciabatta loaf from the bakery is a great loss it was the best bread they did!
