Same here, when I read of people picking up Steak & Stilton pies at Aldi, it just doesn't compute.
I'd LOVE a decent pie. frown

Moved on from pork mince as lamb mince on offer this week so going to give that ago. £1.20 a packet can't go wrong for a little trial and error.

We are having a family get together this week in France and I thought I would try a few of the christmas lines out . The all butter crumbly mince pies are fantastic and the fruit cake was very good too , Aldi we will be back for more!

Aldi luxury mince pies won in the BBC Good Food Christmas competition.
Lidl won the stollen category.
Aldi won some other categories too, eg salted caramel and bourbon glazed ham.

Seeing as we're talking about Christmas grub, for those of you who make your own Christmas cake and pudding. Mrs Fif has just been weighing out the ingredients for the latest batch of her prize winning rich fruit cakes. She commented that Lidl dried fruit, raisins, sultanas etc are very very good quality.

Been into Aldi this morning, they now have 30 day aged steaks, got a couple for tea to see if the are worth a pound more than the 28 day aged ones.

Big fan of Lidl so it surprises me to say this, they have a six pack of pate in jars, they are wrapped a little bit seasonal.

They are awful, too dry and not tasting a lot like pate

Seen the terrines several times but couldn't justify £3 for 6 teaspoons of meat off cuts in fat.

Glad someone tried it first to make sure I was right in staying away.

There's a lot more than 6 teaspoons if you don't like it biggrin

I've just visited an Iceland store for the first time in many, many years and been shocked at the vast array of meat and fish eek

They had loads of frozen seafood including scallops, lobsters, lobster tails, seabass, plus cleaned squid tubes, which I think are a great buy frozen. The meat section was very impressive, with ostrich fillets & burgers, kangaroo fillets, burgers & sausages, rabbit fillet, venison haunch & burgers, boar sausages & burgers.

I'll definitely be popping back to see what some of these are like.
Can recommend the large frozen prawns and the salt and pepper squid.

Have seen artic royal in another supermarket, whole foods market.

So if in there, the quality must be good, plus cheaper in Iceland.
Having never tried Iceland before and being a seafood fan, MrsIanA2 was dispatched to investigate. Results:

1. Lobster and lobster tails. Reasonable flavour but terribly tough. Will stick to Lidl's lobsters and Waitrose's tails.
2. King Scallops. Weird; texture a cross between tofu and jelly, flavour salty. Waste of twelve pounds. Uncooked remainder in bin.
3. Snapper. As it should be.
4. Dover soles yet to be tried.

Verdict. I suppose you have to try everything once.

Having been at home for a few days lunch is an effort so have resorted to an Aldi own brand steak pie and chicken chow mien. And, for what they are there's little wrong with them.

I've also had a shoulder of lamb which was fine and some mince which is what is says it is so all good there.

Today I've picked up a couple of rib eyes and a fillet. Not expecting miracles but through the cellophane they look reasonable, good marbling etc.

Their own mature cheddar is fine for sandwiches and cooking.

I also tried their frozen haddock fillets which were perfectly alright, have used their frozen salmon portions a lot, I mean a lot, ie. several hundred, with no issue. Next is the frozen tuna steaks which should be fine cooked in a sauce with their own gnocci.

Lastly they appear to have some half decent wines now. Particularly enjoying the Minarete from Ribera Del Duero and some of the other Reserva wines.

I think you have to pick and choose, some of it is nasty but partially because its close for me I seem to be using Aldi more and more.

Lobster and scallops are the only things I haven't tried, the rest were nice or just as good as elsewhere.

Suppose those are the bogey foods that I prefer getting fresh.

A bit thin, and not really like those you'd buy from a fishmonger. I like mine thick.

Me and the Mrs got a nice bottle of Prosecco from Aldi the other day, award winning jobbie for about £7.
There's cheaper ones but really enjoyed that

That one ^
We used this for out wedding reception.

I don't mind spending on wines but frankly this is excellent and makes far more expensive fizz look silly.
