I can report back now on the Aldi in Sydney (no pics it felt weird doing that).

Was in North sydney store....

Maybe it was a small store, but much more limited then the uk, their sea food section was tiny, but then I can go buy fresh from Sydney Fish Market so not an issue, the meat section looks better than Coles and Woolworths.

The meat is so much better than UK, but then I expect it to be... Most if not all Steak is 1/2 price or better, works for me. Chicken/pork and of course the Lamb is better too.

They don't 'do' crisps like the UK people do, this place is a lot of health foods and it shows in Aldi too... Frozen food is limited, not much in the way of pizza, etc... lot more frozen veg and fruit.

They love their bread, although Im not a fan or have not found one I actually like yet, seems expensive and lasts a long time in the heat so makes me think there is a lot of preservatives in it, maybe thats why it tastes weird to me.

Their veg and fruit section might be small, but by god it is cheaper than the UK and tastes so good.

Dairy products bar cheese, is a massive improvement and is very cheap too... with that amount of diary, I thought there would be some good cheeses to compete against Europe... nope... pretty much Expensive Euro cheese or Aussie Cheddar, which is bloody cheap at £3 per Kg and going up.

Next stop is to see the farmers markets and the local butches.

The new Lidl of the future store opened in Worcester yesterday. Will be making a call to see the difference, self scan tills, customer restrooms as they are called, mother and baby room apparently. Having driven past the day before, whilst furious car park tarmac laying and white line painting was going on, it certainly looks a big bugger.

Fruit / Veg - no issues here with Aldi but I tend to only buy the stew packs or specific bits for a meal. I buy big bags of frozen veg from Costco as I just cant be bothered with all the washing/peeling/chopping and associated mess.

We buy loads of the aldi chocolate butter biscuits, I like the dark chocolate ones and the better half the milk.

We were Lidl regulars until an Aldi opened closer to us, now around 90% of our food shopping is from Aldi. However, we're sometimes disappointed with their fruit and especially their vegetables. The latter often don't seem as fresh on the day of purchase as those from other supermarkets, neither do they last as long; for example, their potatoes (kept in the dark in a cupboard) sometimes show signs of sprouting 2-3 days after purchase. This doesn't put us off, I'll grub out the 'eyes' and peel them but spuds from other supermarkets don't do this. We've also noticed that Aldi salad bags aren't always fresh; in store we've noticed lettuce leaves looking a bit brown at the edges. It's not a big deal really, the rest of our Aldi shopping is excellent quality, especially their meat.

Toilets?

Fantastic, the amount of times I have had to leave Lidl because I need a pee is shocking.

The Lidl stores near us all have toilets but you have to ask to use them as they're behind a locked door near the tills.

Lazy git here.
I Don't visit my local lidl much but does anyone know if they do bread that's similar in size to the foot longs you get in subway? As much as I like to get a sub from them once in a while I feel like it's a rip off when I'm sure it can easily be done at home for less than half the £5 price tag.

G can't seem to ever find what I want from asda.
Thanks.

Well he was too lazy to see that the question had been answered on the previous page the first time he'd asked.

Bit of a lazy sod here (and also someone who never really goes into Lidl)...

...But does anyone know if they make any footlong sized subs/breads at LIDL? Don't have aldi near me. I fancy making my own sandwiches much like subway, but don' really want to pay as much as £5 for one like subway. I'm sure it could be done at home for less than half that.
Yup, ours does eight inch baguettes, very good they are too.....
Lidl bakery is fantastic. One near us bakes things in house (maybe part baked and finished from frozen in store?) and everything we have tried are far better than anything else we can get from the bakery. Ciabatta's, small rolls, baguettes even cookies and bloomers are all top notch and well worth a try.

Nice and cheap too.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned on this thread, but has anyone tried the £99 pack of ham in Lidl?

This one

I've seen them and been tempted but I reckon unless you're regularly hosting large gatherings it's going to go to waste.

It's a food I like but don't want to eat daily or even weekly.

Although Aldi veg tends not to carry a best before date, you can usually find the freshest batch by looking for the highest number on the 4 digit code they print on the label - look for a number like 4605 printed on, if you find another pack with 4606 or 4607, then that's the freshest.

Not sure why it would spoil as it can last up to 6 months once opened and myself and Don have had one £39-49 version and once past the first cm of harness... its excellent.

I've had the cheaper "non-Iberico" version. It was excellent value for money. I've only eaten half of it so far, but even if I don't eat any more, it was still superb value for money. It is currently far too dry to eat, but when I slice some of it and soak it in water overnight it becomes fully restored.

If you buy one you will need to buy a stand to hold it while you cut slices off. You will also need a special knife.

This knife is also excellent for cutting smoked salmon.

A few weeks ago I noticed that Aldi were selling a jamon that included the stand. If the Aldi stand was any good, then this would be better value for money.

A word of warning. Before you touch it with a knife, use YouTube to learn how to carve it. Here is a sample:-

I just started slicing it and very quickly got into a mess.

Big shop done and under £50. Only a few things over £1.00

Not food but I picked up a couple of these too. What a bargain.

Picked up a smoked salmon and mussel bisque (soup) from the deluxe range in Lidl yesterday and some crusty bread, very nice!
