Tried the frozen specially selected swordfish last night....bit meh, like tuna but with less taste.
Not Aldi/Lidl's fault; the shark family of fish aren't great eating. Bland, overly muscley meat.

Always thought that swordfish is for people who don't particularly like fish.

Off topic, but I was one of those, fish, meh, bit of cod with batter wrapped round it was OK, but the thought of grilled bony sardines or whatever just turned me off.

Then a colleague, a known foodie, took me to a restaurant in New Orleans, and he ordered yellowfin tuna, blackened on the outside, but cooked very rare. Life changing dish.

My local has the Global block and knife set at £169 eek

I have no need personally but if anyone is near to Paignton its a good buy.
I was in there earlier looking for the pizza oven BBQ thing but they didn't have it...
We sell Global stuff & that is incredibly, incredibly cheap, although most people within the trade don't tend to buy Global, it seems to be more a fashion accessory & a lot of chef's don't like the feel of them.

Too late to flick through and check this hasn't been mentioned but Aldi have a beer festival on right now. £1.15 a bottle and lots of great independent breweries.

I buy the frozen tuna, defrost it and sear it with a blackened spice instead of following the pack instructions.

Tuna should not be eaten cooked through!

Lidls now selling Holland's pies in the freezer.

The king of all the pies
Are you mad??? Hollands pies are only good if you have never, ever tasted a pie before and have no point of reference. Even then they are meh. ALL other pies are better than Hollands. I avoid chippies who proudly pronounce they serve them. They contain about 10ml of filling and the rest is pastry.

Agreed!

My local chippy sources its pies/sausage from a very good local farm shop and pots of ice cream from a local creamery. Wouldn't touch a pukka/hollands pie!

They were on shelves in the special offer section, not the main booze section of my local store (just in case you rock up and apply 'bemused face')

Aldi abe just today opened a store in my nearest town. Just so happens I'm working in a surgery a few minutes drive away today so just popped in in my lunch hour. It's bigger than other stores I've been in before. And they've got a BBQ on outside, though queue was fairly long. Think I'll be shopping there regularly from now on.

Not sure if every store has the ales, as they didn't have any in my closest store so had to go to the next one:

I sampled the two far left of the photo...Cameron's Strongarm delicious, the other too hoppy for me, just kind of standard bitter, really. All the others are lighter/more hoppy/wheatier than I like. Nice to find another good one, though.

It's safer if it has been frozen for a while as it helps kill off any parasites that may be present.

What's the mercury content in tuna these days?

Has anyone managed to try the Aldi wagyu burgers, whenever I go there they seem to have sold out! Is there a trick to getting them?

I have. They're nice, but not worth the premium over Aldi's 'Premium' pack of two burgers.

The lamb burgers are nice too (and, surprisingly, lower fat per unit than the beefburgers!)
