Having been a member of PH for around 10 years I should know better than to expect anything other than sniping and digging rather than a rational discussion. My point about the layout was, there's no logic, they have frequently just shoved stuff where there's a gap on the shelf, not grouped like with like. It doesn't make it easy to find stuff you want - but perhaps that's the whole point, it makes you walk round three times, during which you'll pick up stuff you didn't think you wanted. I couldn't give a toss about the packaging, I was merely remarking that an inordinate amount of the designs were extremely similar to more established foods of the same type, e.g. biscuits, washing capsules, etc.

As you were. I'm really not feeling like I'm missing much.
aldi sometimes have promotions that have a theme , so that might account for similar items being in more than one place. i have shopped in maybe 5 or 6 different branches , whilst they differ in layout , i have not seen the situation you describe.
my local can get untidy and a bit cluttered because it is so busy. the lidl seems to be more tidy but tends not to be as busy.

My post wasn't a dig, merely an observation based on your previous comment. I don't particularly enjoy shopping in Aldi but then I don't expect to. There is logic to Aldi's layout and, in my experience of my local store, like is grouped with like with the only exception being special weekly offers and even those are together in the central aisle. Like you, I don't give a toss about packaging, it's what's inside that matters.

I fi d their layout a damn sight easier than Morrison. That's why I keep going. In and out, 20min. Morrison? An hour.

Dislikes? Poor range and they dump good products for cheaper ones without warning. Or they just drop poor sellers. They have just dropped a yogurt that I loved. It was made in Germany, I suspect by Zott, and it was great. It's now UK made, not sure where, maybe Dairy Crest. It's nowhere near as good. They did the same with a cider that was great and is now vile.

ive never had s problem with layout. it reminds me of quick save or macro where I used to buy stuff with my dad. i think normal supermarkets are better laid out but you pay the privilege. i do 80& of my shops in lidl and aldi now. the own brands are a bit hit and miss.

Aldi is not for everyone but as its a new store i would say give it another try in a few months time. Bear in mind most the staff have probably never worked in a supermarket before your local one opened including management so there will be some issues that will improve with experience.

My new local Aldi has improved massively since it first opened

Bit of an odd question but here goes. We bought some of those loose self serve pistachios from Lidl. Two of us have had gippy guts which seems to have been traced, completely unscientifically to eating these nuts. Anyone else had any issues?

Don't buy self serve nuts, or eat the peanuts on the bar in pubs. You wouldn't want to lick my fingers without checking I'd washed my hands, would you? Probably not even afterwards for that matter but you get the picture.

Had a bottle of the Aldi Malbec last night, very nice for £6.
This stuff is superb. Especially when put through one of those aerator gadgets.

What, you mean poured into a jug or a carafe and then left open for 5 minutes? :-P

We've been drinking this, it sits on our shelf next to a bottle of Plymouth and some Tanqueray and I don't think it comes off badly at all and it's a good bit cheaper.

I tend to pour a small amound and put the cork back in. I then give the bottle a vigorous shake. This seems to do the trick very nicely.

Hmm. I'm kind of caught between two stools here. I work (relatively) long hours, and don't often have the time or energy to traipse around a supermarket looking for things which should be more obviously located. As such, I use the huge Waitrose near me, as it offers as much choice as I could ever need and an almost stress-free experience.
However, when I have a bit more time on my hands (such as shopping when MrsC is away), I find the experience of wandering the aisles of my local Aldi quite liberating - sort of embracing the 'hunter-gatherer' gene. If you can be bothered to look/dig, there's plenty of great food on offer, and some of the wines are better than I've had from Naked. As a bonus, I quite often come out with some useless tool/trinket that I just couldn't leave in the basket.

But, I quite often don't manage to get everything I was looking for (I might substitute something if non-essential), and the experience is anything but relaxing (I don't know how people do it with kids). On occasion, some of the food (particularly fresh stuff) has been very underwhelming compared to other supermarkets, but I suppose that comes with the price-point.

I like that. Definitely works!

I remember a taste test from a wine magazine where identical bottles of red were left in different places for a year.
(Wine cellar, kitchen, restaurant cellar, boot of a car.)

After a year, everyone in the blind taste group favorited the bottle that had been kept in the boot of the family car!

Anyway, that £6 Aldi Malbec is great paired with Aldi's £3.09 ribeye steaks. Superb combo for the money.

I've yet to try their 'Specially Selected' ribeyesteaks, will grab some on the next trip.

Some while ago someone mentioned that the shortbread in Lidl was made by Walkers. The other day couldn't get to Lidl, so bought their equivalent stuff in Tesco, same packaging different colour. Awful stuff, completely overbaked. (said in a scouse Paul Hollywood accent)

Back to Lidl it is then.

These appeared in the 'new lines/promo lines' section at the start of the chilled food section today. Mushroomy, oniony, burgery wotsits.

Will consume this evening and report back.
