ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?

Buy anything that seems 'Continental' in there. Any produce that looks slightly 'German' is usually good; beers, meats, cheese etc etc. Aldi do some really nice food, when I lived in Preston I recall absolutely loving some of their 'finest' range ice creams.
I love October at Aldi though (or should I say 'Oktober') since they get all the Oktoberfest stuff in. Special beers, delicious cured meats (the kabanos are amazing), what a treat.

Well I came out with what looks like a lot of shopping for £35 which is a bargain compared to the usual weekly shop. Raw meat will be purchased from the butcher.
This is what me & the OH do.Only thing we struggle to get in the local Aldi is decent lettuce....... God knows why, they just don't get it.
Everything else is grand.
Raw meat, we have a very good local butchers and numerous farm shops. But for the "cupboard stockers" et al.... ALDI is a win

king around just one of everything until you get to the things you like a choice of, like meata, cheese and cereals. Oh and no faffing around putting change back in your purse or neatly stacking things into bags while everybody waits they practically kick ditherers out of the way, just the way it should be :-)

Yes I'd agree with this, I did take some bags but just shoved it all in the trolley! current best buy status for bread is Farmfoods 3 full sized loaves of Hovis white / brown / half and half in medium or thick sliced for 2 quid and iirc they don't mind mix and match as long as it's three loaves.
Being a poor student I'm an Aldi regular - buy most things there but by far the best are the cooked meats, some of the raw meats (the "specially selected" bacon, sausages being a good example), fruit and veg.
The "Specially Selected Columbian Instant Coffee" is good too, and a lot cheaper than elsewhere at £1.69. Recently changed the packaging of this - and Tesco sell their "Finest" range of instant coffees in the old style jars for £3.40+. Pretty sure it's the same..

Aldi were selling Hovis for 69p/loaf at one point for those that don't need 3.... Maybe aren't now.All our food comes from Aldi and Waitrose.
Mrs IP does Waitrose on a Saturday morning (she is there now!) and I do Aldi durring the week.
The Aldi I go to in Bournemouth is the best "man type" supermarket you could ask for. Allways quiet, hardly ever any kids/chavs/geriatrics and never long waits at check out.
I buy,
Specially Selected coffee (Java and Ethiopean).
Choceur Fruit and Nut chocholate (far better than Cadburys used to be).
All our fresh fruit and veg, cheaper than any other supermarket and better than even Waitrose.
Continental cured meats (Milano Salami and German baked ham) for weekday lunches.
Extra mature west country cheddar.
Chilled fruit juices.
Free range chicken (£4.99)
Their sirloin steaks (£3.19) are the best supermarket steak going. 1" thick 21 day hung and yellow fat. 2 days air dried in fridge and pan cokked "a la Heston" they will take a lot of beating even by the local butcher!
And then there is the TOOLS............

Can't really fault anything from lidl/aldi, in particular cooked meats, jars of antipasto at 1/3rd the price of the big stores, the £8 bottles of vodka are better than smirnoff red- fine for general mixing, the OH prefers the knockoff baileys to the branded. The chocolates are as good as much more expensive stuff (great party tip- just remove the packaging;). The fresh veg keeps better than other supermarkets- twice as long IME. Ground coffee's great and half the price. could go on and on.
I do the bulk of my shopping at Lidl (there isn't an Aldi anywhere nearby) and only go to Waitrose for more specialist stuff which Lidl doesn't sell.
Lidl fruit and veg is excellent and typically 30% cheaper than anywhere else - plus there are further offers on these every weekend.
The freezer section is also worth checking out: two partridges for £4.99 (they're £5.99 each in Waitrose), £1.99 for 500g of frozen raspberries. I could go on...

I'll see if ALDI's freezer section is the same. I've been very impressed. As you say the veg is excellent. The bulk of the shopping will be done here from now on (bye bye TESCO!). I'm based away from my London Waitrose at the moment (3 min walk away normally)
