Toro Loco is cheap as chips and has won awards, found in Aldi in the red section
It's remarkably good at the price and goes down better than a number of more expensive wines.
I didnt want to suggest it.. simply because I havent got a clue about one nice red from the next, but I DO like Toro Loco!...

...Ive had the black labeled 'ToroLoco Reserve' a few times too.
Don't do yourself down, regardless of what you may think you know, if you think it tastes good and it's worth drinking, then it is!

The Argnatine Malbec is nice for the price. The NZ Pinot Noir is good too.
Another vote for the Malbec.
£5.99 in my Aldi. Another like.

I'm not sure if you get the "Tudor" Australian Shiraz over there, but it is a great wine, made by an award winning winemaker who does some cracking wines at good price points.

It might only be me, but I have a pathological dislike of Aussie reds, they always have an aftertaste to me. It tastes as if someone has dropped a vodka shot into it when you weren't looking. Sadly I avoid them now regardless if they are good or not....

As well it might, most Australian wines are 13.5 or 14 adv against 12 or 12.5 for French. That extra alcohol is exactly the taste of a vodka in there.

I know what you are saying and sort of agree with you ...but I drink a fair bit of Rioja that's normally 13.5% and that doesn't have a vodka aftertaste. It's as if it's been added afterwards, overmanufactured if you like. I suppose it's a bit like the period the Aussies went through in over oaking in their whites..
I've drunk enough wine over the years and really don't bother with Aussie wines because of the above. Plenty of new world wines out there that are much better value and have superior taste. As I said it could just be me....

The big barossa reds can be like that and I'm not a huge fan. Try non-Barossa and they are quite different.

It's a massive country so different regions produce vastly different wines. A cool climate pinot noir from Kings Valley is so different to a Coonawarra Cab Sav.

I don't like the overly passionfruit flavours of kiwi sauv blanc. But I will always try other wines.

How can the taste of vodka have got in there? Alcohol is not vodka, nor does it taste like it

Vodka is 40% alcohol, 60% water, not much else. Funnily enough the dominant flavour of vodka is alcohol, and a wine at 14% ABV has a stronger alcohol flavour than one at 12.

I've tried a number of Lidl reds, and from this conclude that there are only one or two worth bothering with: South African Merlot at £4.49 (or thereabouts) is a good everyday glugger; the Valpolicella ripasso at £7.99 is very good indeed and smart enough to take anywhere.

I find the rest of Lidl's cheapie reds are rather 'chemistry set', the more expensive Burgundy and Rhone wines a bit thin and sour.

I had an Aldi chicken jalfresi meal for one tonight, it was very good for £1.49. The wife had the Chinese curry and she was pleased with that also.
Yep the Jalfrezi is the pick of the instant curries, the packaging has changed recently, hopefully the contents haven't.

Additionally I'd like to recommend the Maris Piper extra special chips. Crispy n fluffy n thick.

Tried the Toro Loco last night, was excellent.

I shopped at Harrogate Aldi yesterday, it was shockingly bad and far worse than the other new ones around here. If I thought that was the norm I probably would never shop there.

I bought a couple of bottles on Friday too; the black label 'Reserva'. A phenomenal value wine.

are those the ones in the green bag?

If so, bit of a guilty pleasure here too - probably the best frozen chips I've ever tasted

Warning: The following post may contain nuts.

Peanut butter alert!

Aldi has got its Specially Selected variant in again. So yummy!

In the Aisle of Dreams, not with the regular products in the jams and spreads section.

Hactually, 100% proof spirits are only 50% alcohol. Pure alcohol is 200% proof.

You're mixing your degrees and percentages.
