ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?
Discussion
I wish the continual reference to Aldi & Lidl as "discounters" would stop. I don't see them as such, I see them using a better model than the others and providing, in general, higher quality goods at, in general, lower prices.
If they stack their shelves with the same goods as the rest, and sold them cheaper, then yes they would be discounters. But that's not what they do. They do things differently, and to my mind better. Rant over.

Agreed, Mrs did a price comparison today on a few things, the standard product in Lidl, was to the penny the same as the Everyday product in Tesco, and is better quality. The Deluxe version is the same price as the Tesco standard. Just to argue against myself the next product was cheaper in Lidl, and again better quality. The deluxe was the same price as the standard in Tesco. Rinse and repeat. If they stack their shelves with the same goods as the rest, and sold them cheaper, then yes they would be discounters. But that's not what they do. They do things differently, and to my mind better. Rant over.
But as you say it's a different business proposition in many ways, not just price.

I've been warned NOT to buy a horse coat.
We don't have a horse but Mrs knows I might buy one in case we do one day.

Aldi and Lidl are the ultimate 'prepper' stores
Passed on to the old man who bought all the attachments in Mallorca Aldi (but no compressor!!)
Reduced from £25 to £7.50 which I thought might be a mistake but no.
It had the hoop, net, backboard, fixings and an unbranded ball.
Back on track, I agree on the cereals and boxed goods. Porridge oats are amazing value. The cereals are as good as the big brands for far less. My wife tends to do the weekly shop in Sainsbury's but i do a weekly Aldi trip for specific items. I like the jams and the kids are into the croissants and steaks. And don't forget to get Jaffa Cakes: 24 for 89p!

Slight disagreement there. Agree that the porridge oats are very cheap, that's in Lidl btw, but in comparison to the whole rolled oats in the Sainsbury's TTD range they are a very poor affair.
I will slightly disagree I microwave my porridge as it's very easy and done in 3 mins. Oatilicious from Lidl is fine at 99p.The TTD whole rolled oats don't microwave very well, in fact they don't mention microwaving them as a method of cooking on the packet. I only tried them once as cooking on the hob is too much of a faff - and was thinking I'd make flapjacks with them instead of porridge.

Mind you if it weren't so inconvenient I'd get them direct from a mill as they are better still.

Jumbo oats are fine for flapjacks but no good at all for porridge. IMHO, etc.
Would disagree here. I get the Scotts/Quaker ones under usual 2 for £3 offers. I think they are better for porridge as the jumbo oats take a bit longer to break down in the body. Making them is easy- cover with milk, microwave till starts to rise, stir, microwave again till rises, stir then once more. About 3 minutes.
