Aldi have got the awesome Burts Guinness crisps in at the moment, picked up a bag of the Hot chilli and a bag of Toasted Cheese. 99p for a big bag!

My local Lidl has installed a load of self check outs and now only opens a manned till if the queue for the selfies gets too long.

I wonder if it is a move that will backfire as one of the advantages of Lidl was that the staff were more amiable than in other supermarkets.

Also. It is Alpine Week this week so I shall be having schnitzel for tea tomorrow.

Lidl used to do those XXXL schnitzels almost as big as a pizza, but not seen them for a while, so I make my own now.

I often avoided Lidl/Aldi if its peak time/Im in a rush, as there is more chance of their being longer queues than the larger supermarkets. One Lidl nearby has has put in 5 or 6 self checkouts (removed only 1 manned checkout row to do this) but is also keeping some manned open too so best of both worlds.

With the size of the non-custom built branches being small, a busy stores only option is self checkout as you can fit multiple into a small space.

I guess that would work well for customers picking up a few bits

I was in Aldi today and noticed that they keep Eden Mill gin. They had traditional, chilli and ginger as well as Blueberry and Vanilla.

Eden Mill normally costs £30+ per bottle but these bottles were only £20.

Anyone any idea of the quality of them?

I've been enjoying the Knight's 'Malvern Gold' cider that's recently appeared on Aldi's shelves a little too much. A distinctive taste and not badly priced.

I'm still not massively keen on Aldi for day to day food items, but the cider is making me visit more often..
Well it would appear this has now disappeared from Aldi shelves, I think I've tried three different stores to no avail. I don't suppose anyone else has seen it recently?

Disappointing as Aldi seemed to be the only local retailer, I'll persevere and at leasts both Aldi and Lidl have reasonable alternatives but this particular one really struck a chord.

The new Aldi in Aylesbury had both versions of the Malvern Gold cider last week, will be annoyed if they stop selling it as both are a decent cider

Thanks, I'll have to check again. I've not noticed two different versions at any point, what's the difference?

I'm sure I said this about 30 pages back but if I didn't the chocolate digestives are quality. Miles better than McVities or any other, proper malty, decent chocolate and about half the price.

I've had the Chinese style chicken wings today, they were very good. The kids like the chocolate puddings that come in shot glasses but they are quite pricy at 69p each.

Those chocolate puddings are bloody lovely. They do some packets of 5 small bars of white chocolate too. Really very nice indeed.

Whoah, steady on! 69p? Blimey. Still, if the shot glasses are half OK then it's a cheap way to stock up for parties!

Absolutely, me too. There used to be an upmarket yogurt sold in France in an earthenware pot, I had a few of those kicking around containing loose change, paperclips, and the like. I think they have now been lost or thrown out, a shame because with a hole in the bottom they would make good plant pots for little cacti and the like.
