I buy the 4 pint milk and it's £1 at both Lidl and Aldi whereas a 4 pint from Tesco or Sainsburys is £1.39.
All these small pence differences soon add up.
We've started going to Aldi and it's saving us about £20 a week compared to Tesco, but the milk isn't great, in my opinion. It's cheap, but tends to go off quite quickly. As I'm the only one that drinks milk, it tends to go to waste. We've got a Tesco around the corner and their milk with a purple label is about the same price, but will last a week, so I get that instead

Had exactly the same problem from Aldi in Truro - think it's Trewithen Dairy (?), didn't last very long. Often find the same with Rodda's in local Londis/Spar too

Can't say I agree with that but I always make sure I buy the longest dated milk they have (they usually have quite a wide range) - seems on par with anywhere else. Could be a local issue though.

I think it's probably a local issue as the milk I buy from Lidl/Aldi currently lasts a week.
In the summer I find any Supermarket fresh milk goes off within a few days.

The one we use is the Aldi in Camborne, but I think you're right about it being Trewithan dairy on the label.

You could well be right about it being a local issue. In fairness I don't check the date when I buy it, but it seems to go off at least a couple of days before the date on it.

Arla Foods have a fairly firm hold over Trewithen now I think so you may find that they are influencing what gets supplied but I've had the same with a lot of "normal" milk of late, if just doesn't seem to last very well at all, this tends to steer me towards Cravendale... which is probably what they want.

I'll just quote myself from yesterday.

Yes, the milk. Comes from our local dairy with a different label on it and is several pence cheaper than the other supermarkets. What gives the source away is that the cages the milk is in have the original dairys name on them!

MacCallums = Grahams
Same dairy, same milk. You don't think Waitrose et al have higher quality Holsteins, do you? rolleyes

After reading this thread I bit the bullet and decided to persuade Mrs SB to do the weekly shop at Aldi on Sunday.

It cost us £44 compared to £70 at Waitrose, I didn't get chance to try some of the more speciality things but what we got has been great so far. Veg was much cheaper but best bit was the meat. We got a free range chicken for £4.99 that would have cost almost double at Waitrose, the mince was nice and the chicken breast good too.

The only item we thought wasn't great was the pasta sauce, but really shouldn't complain for 29p!

Just a shame I don't get a free Telegraph and a coffee.

Or do what I do - which is an Aldi then a Waitrose ( for the coffee and Telegraph) then move on to Tesco and return home via Sainsburys.

Check out all their best offers on the comp before you leave the house biggrin

I know this is Lidl, but what the hell.

Lidl used to do some processed cheese in slices, emmental and another kind, well after about two years away it's back!! biggrin

It shares a box with the other cheese which is in a blue package, the emmental is in red. Try it, it ain't haute cuisine but it's a damn fine piece of junk.

Another trip yesterday, this time to a different branch. Slumming it with an Audi A7 and a 997GT3 in the car park.

Thought I'd try the wine this week. Perfectly acceptable Cotes du Rhone, £3.79. Too good for a stew!

May try the £4.99 Bordeaux next week. There were some reds at £9.99 but I may do some homework before splashing out on these!

Does anybody have any recommendations on the red?

Aldi reds are highly rated, although I haven't tried any since I'm nowhere near one. I might make a trip in the interests of 'research'.

Lidl reds I have sampled extensively and highly rate both the SA and the Aussie Merlot for the price. The rest not so much. I've tried the more expensive Vacqueyras, Cotes du Rhone and Rioja, and find these a bit on the thin side. Not the big flavour punch I'd expect. Drinkable, but not good enough to justify the premium over the cheaper wines.

Lidl Chablis at £7.49 is something else entirely. It knocks any supermarket offering at under £15 into a cocked hat. The NZ sauvignon blanc at £5.99 is pretty good too.

Thanks for that, I've had a couple of horrors from Ldl which has frightened me off further explorations. I'l give the Chablis and the SB a go. Currently I get most of my wine from either Majestic or Naked Wine. Majestic are currently offering Latour's Macon-Lugny for £8.99. Not found anything yet to beat it at the price.

In that case I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, especially if you like a less minerally style. (I do.) However the Chablis was out of stock last time I looked in the Dorking branch. I'm hoping that's just a blip and they haven't run out. frown It's the 2012 one you want.

How do you find Naked Wine. I have a few hundred invested with them but have never ordered, and their emails are quite comical.
