ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?

I've tried a few of the Lidl tinned soups and casseroles and find them too salty for me. That stuff is made to the Central European taste, where salt is considered one of your five-a-day.
Anything vaguely 'Oriental' / 'Indian' from Lidl is also a bit odd. It will have either pineapple chunks or raisins in.
I disagree. The CTM sauce is excellent Anything vaguely 'Oriental' / 'Indian' from Lidl is also a bit odd. It will have either pineapple chunks or raisins in.

Went to Lidl last night and picked up their kangaroo steaks... thought it would be worth a laugh.
Also have diced wild boar for a goulash tomorrow.
Lets see how good it really is.
Both are excellent, as is their duckling and their "veal liver". Odd way to describe it, but nothing odd about the quality. Also have diced wild boar for a goulash tomorrow.

They have a few different ranges with varying quality; the ones that are the more specific tend to be pretty good while the stuff that's got a different branding and more generic naming tends to be pretty poor (very watery and filled with raisins).Joey Ramone said:

I thought the pea and ham soup was diabolical. Oaties biscuits are amazing though...
That pea and ham soup is indeed gopping. Absolutely disgusting. Not a patch on what can be had elsewhere.Granville said:
I got a jar of Carbonara Sauce at the weekend as my little lad loves pasta Carbonara. It was very garlicy and neither tasted or looked like Carbonara sauce.
I also got two little jars of Pate, one Pheasant, the other Venison.
What on earth is carbonara sauce? Spaghetti alla Carbonara is essentially spaghetti, to which once cooked cooked, a few bits of prosciutto/pancetta and a couple of egg yolks are added. Where's the sauce?I also got two little jars of Pate, one Pheasant, the other Venison.
I've been trying a few of their (Aldi) cooking sauces recently.
Chilli-con-carne, Chicken Tika, Blackbean Sauce, Madras etc etc.
Now normally I'd make these sauces myself, but to be honest the price is at a point where they are cheaper than buying two tins of chopped tomatoes.
I've been pleasantly surprised, the Chilli is lovely, you need to spice it up a bit if you want it hot, but great flavour.
Their rice selection however is utter pants, practically dust. If you cook it for three minutes too long with a bit too much water then you're eating slop.

I 'sort of' agree with the economic argument. Jarred sauces at Lidl have been cheap enough to make me think "Why not give it a go?" However I conclude having tried them that they're not nicer than home made from scratch. Chilli-con-carne, Chicken Tika, Blackbean Sauce, Madras etc etc.

The cost of spices is the kicker, however these are a quarter of the price in supermarkets when bought from an Asian grocer / Oriental cash and carry.

There are some excellent spice dealers on eBay. Good prices and much fresher than most shop bought offerings. The last lot I bought, the seller claimed they milled/ ground everyday, and I believe them.
