ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?
Discussion
Lidl do a Flammekuche in the freezer section. Very common in northern France but I've never been able to get it over here until now. It's a bit like a pizza with creme fraiche, nice cheese, bacon and onion.
Tried it for the first time last week. Very tasty. Only criticism is that the base is very thin and it falls apart in the oven if you follow the instructions and put it directly on the oven shelf. Needs a baking tray and a bit more heat than the instructions specify (it needs to get crisp quickly). But very nice

Lidl are currently doing those whole leg of serrano ham for £40 or so ... awesome
Agreed, for once I managed to bag one. The ham is truly superb,I managed to get their hunks of proscuitto and black forest hams too a month or so back.
Both were excellent, but the Serrano is really in a class of it's own.
£39.99 actually. These pennies matter

From Lidl? I've got some in the fridge. What did you have them with out of interest?
Aldi ones actually. The sauce was quite sweet but they just fell off the bones with plenty of meat, lovely. I had them with some boiled/part roasted garden spuds and Aldi courgette, lovely. Stack said:

How do you carve it, with a slicer ? And how long does it keep?
You can carve it with a very sharp knife, not sure how long it lasts as it my first one , around 3 /4 months I think The last one we had we tried to keep out on a stand, but it really didn't keep that well.
I roasted one of the medium sized chickens this week. The Mrs is paranoid about chicken so it was in a little too long. The breast was fine but thigh / leg was a bit scrawny really.
Also tried poached eggs with the Aldi free range ones. Perhaps I've got a bad batch but they just fell apart in the water whereas my tesco ones hold firm.

Well new convert to this thread.
Been going to Lidl for a while for odds and ends but as Mrs Fif had a Sainsburys staff discount card we tended out of idleness to shop there. Whenever we checked it brought their prices down to equal or lower than the others but not Lidl level. Then there were the specials, 20% discount off the top iPad retina jobby is a discount worth having.
Anyway now she's joined the ladies who lunch crowd we don't have that facility.
So saving money it is.
Quite frankly we are going to be doing more and more of our stuff in Lidl. Aldi is in the next town and that one is definitely a don't make eye contact with the clientele. Plus it's untidy, not that clean and the stuff we got wasn't that cheap tbh. For example do I want their own brand Cheerios or pay 9p more for the proper stuff. No brainer really. Yes could see some stuff was good but we didn't want that and our local Lidl is altogether a much nicer place.
Can't see us going back to the big 4/6 except to get particular own brand products of theirs that we really like when they are on offer.
So not adding much except to say thanks to all the various contributors to the thread whose recommendations plus astute price watching has allowed me to convert a Yorkshire born lass back to her being careful with the brass upbringing. Please raise a glass of Lidl finest brew. Cheers.

Lidl don't always have these in but when they do I usually stock up on them. Great for marinating boneless chicken thighs for the barbecue or we sometimes mix with yogurt and marinate chicken breast chunks for a curry. Think they do a tikka one and a spicy mango one as well, haven't tried those though.
I tried Lidl for a couple of weeks as a change to Aldi.
Good things
Jelly sweets, plain and sour (Sugarland) - excellent, really quite fruity and sour. Better than Haribo.
Summer sizzler golden ale - very refreshing and reduced to 99p.
Special pork sausages £1.99 for 8, quite possibly the nicest sausages I've ever tasted.
Bad things
Don't try shopping late to avoid crowds, they let the shelves run to empty after 8pm
Frozen spare rib thingies - tough as old boots and tasteless.
The weekly specials don't seems as "special"
I think it's back to Aldi for me.
