I don't think that Aldi/ Lidl etc have the buying power to force down wholesale prices.

A good deal of meat is free range, whilst a large amount of all fresh stuff is sourced in the UK, which can't be said of many large supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsburys. That sits very well with me.

The savings are primarily made by having far lower overheads in the first place, much less staffing, cheaper buildings and far less product line (think it's something like 1300 lines for a typical Aldi compared with 30,000 for a Tesco).

Got a few family friends who are farmers and they welcome the bloody noses that these guys are giving the big operators.
Indeed, and of course having fewer product lines means that the buyers can have closer relationships with suppliers and keep a keen eye on quality too.
This is bang on-

the product is good, but limited. We tend to do our main show in Aldi and then do a top up shop in Waitrose. We probably spend the same as we would in Tesco but get more food, more variety and a better overall quality

Tried Lidl's 3-fish roast over the weekend - well worth a nobble at £5.99

Indeed; it's from a freezer. But it looks more like a pie.
They do a three bird version too.

PS - I haven't tried either.

Might have to give that a try.

Haven't been to Aldi as much lately as we've been inundated with Ocado and Waitrose offers, which is nice.
2 lots of £10 off when you spend £40 and 2 lots of 20% off when you spend £50.

Yup! Salmon, haddock and cod with breadcrumb topping. 850g and more than enough for two.

Did you get a referendum vote and an offer of sturgeon with those too?

(Sorry too many fish jokes flying around, I'll go get my 'haddock salmond') hehe

I've just come back from my local Aldi, got a trolley full including a bottle of wine, nappies, a couple of treats but the rest being you basic weekly food shop - £67.

Impressed, that would have set me back at least £100 or more in Tesco or Sains. I remember paying sub £70 for my food shop about 5 years ago at Tesco etc.

Trying to understand if it's me having a senior moment, or it's a con, or where the mistake lies.

Lidl Ribena.

Sign says 1.99 (+66% free)

But they are 1 litre bottles and the same costs £2 in Sainsburys etc.

Confused.

they are normally only the same price when on offer in sainsburys etc.
The lidl one is that price all the time and is labelled as a smaller bottle with extra free

Yes just looked again and it's working on same price as 600ml but for 1litre.

Just happens that everybody else is almost matching it.

Me being dumb then.

Noticeable how on so many lines the big chains have reduced prices when you use the comparison apps.

Meanwhile, another interesting wine from Lidl: a 2012 Mercurey, Domaine de la Grangerie, £9.99.

Quite light, but very 'cherryish', with notes of rose hips and bubble gum. I suspect a Pinot Noir / Gamay blend.

If you like a classic Passetoutgrain (and I do), then you will love this wine. drunk

I'm much more of a Bordeaux, rather than a Burgundy, fan.

However, this is very, very, nice wine and good value at the price.

Very much recommended and thank you for the heads-up. smile

Usually between £30 to £50 more....so good price. I bought one some time ago. Battery wasn't great. Bought a new one on-line since when it's been great.

Good bit of kit for car cleaning!
