A double challenge this month...

Cook us up a quintessential 'PH' dish. We want to see pies, meat, chips, butter - the lot. A dish representing the soul of Pistonheads.

But....

We are going to calorie-count.

You can either list your ingredients (with weights) and someone will do it for you or go to http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calorie-chart-nut... and find your ingredients.

We want the usual pictures and also the total calorific content of your portion of home-cooked food.

Final rankings will be based on your votes minus a percentage based on your dish's contribution to the total entry calorie count.

You could go for a huge pie that looks great but loses a big % of your votes for being too calorific, or make a salad and keep all of your (very few!) votes.

Entries here by 21st, giving 2 week-ends, poll will run until 29th to make way for new comp in March.

Good luck!

Good Morning Gentlemen!

Apologies for my somewhat extended absense, its fair to say work has been tough the past couple of months, and inbetween extended hours and some serious stress i've not had time to indulge.

But i'm back and loving the idea of this challenge.... Cotty needs to get about 5billion votes by my reckoning to get even half a chance lol

Wouldn't be so sure croakey, Cottys albeit substantial portion size dont tend to be heavy on the calories.

But if a roast potato has X amount of calories, its not going to swing in my favour if I have 20 of them getmecoat

I suppose I could just chuck a few on a side plate and photo that.

Are we going to work it on calories per regular portion size ? If I make a meal for 4 and only eat 1 portion, do I get penalised ?

calories per 100 gram would be the fairest way to calculate.

So are we going with calories per 100g?

I'm going to whack out some ultra healthy curries this weekend me thinks...

yes

Sounds a good idea.

Have my recipe ready, but I think it might take longer weighing and calculating than the actual cooking.

Just to start the ball rolling smile

I thought I'd just go with a slab of meat as rump steak was 150calories per 100g

Then thought I ought to add a few more ingredients to it

Then decided I'd just have a very small portion biggrin

Steak and chips smile approx 300 calories biggrin

My entry.

Pinto Bean Burrito.

Ingredients:

First up Hugh Fearnley Barstools Pinto Bean Chilli.

Which ended up making far more than I needed.

Calories on the Chilli. (With working!) Total weight is the weighed finished food. Total Calories is individual cals added up. Cal/100g is calculated from the above two figures.

Ingredient Weight (g) cal/100g Cals
Pinto Beans 200 140 280
Onions 165 30 50
Garlic 6 149 9
Peppers 280 27 76
Courgettes 436 18 78
Kidney Beans 400 105 420
Tomatos 400 23 92
Total 2527 40 1005

Not bad. A 2.5 kg Chilli with 1000 cal works out at 40 cal/100g. Needs tweaking though.

I made my Chapati dough then tried an experiment and put it through a pasta roller. After a few runs through it was spot on. Square Chapatis are easier to fill, too.

Add 100g of low fat cheese and some parsley.

20 minutes at 160C.

Ingredient Weight (g) cal/100g Cals
Chilli 1000 40 400
Flour 250 320 800
Cheese 100 302 302
Total 1380 108 1502

Final calories per 100g 108. One portion was 1/4 of the finished dish so 375 cal. Positively healthy. biggrin

Served with a nice Chillian Pinot Noir. No idea how many calories are in it and I don't really care!

smile

Pinto beans higher in calories than cheese? can't be right... your dish may be healthier than you think! biggrin

Looks scrummy by the way smile

Hmmm. Good point. I was using this line "Serving Size: 1/4 cup (Dry) 36g, Calories: 120, Fat: 0g, Carbs: 22g, Protein: 7g" from the site linked to in the first post. I was just looking for one using grams rather than cups.

There is another suggestion that says 86g is 120cal (140cal/100g) which is closer to the kidney beans.

I'll edit my post.

Actually thinking about it it may be the cheese that's too low... because the flour is higher than the cheese too. Which can't be right... or can it? I give up, getting confused now wink

Cheese is pretty low, but it was taken from the packet. It is low fat cheese. Flour seemed high to me too, but again that was what the packet said.

I'm glad I don't do this for every meal!

Given that Summer is the season of the PH BBQ, whether it be at Pistonfest, Le Mans or in your own back yard, a BBQ has to be a PH favorite.

BBQ Pork Chop, Prawns and Home Made Burgers ready to go.

Cooking on the BBQ

Lobster and prawn sauce warming up too

Taste on a plate ! Served with a dressed rocket and watercress salad

Followed up by a Gin overlooking the Ocean (with the first home grown lime of the season)

I'll add ingredients and quantities when I'm sober.

Edit
and here they are

Ingredient Qty Weight Calories
Pork BBQ Chop 265 g 265 374
Prawns - Large 6 300 231
Salad
Rocket & Watercress Salad Leaf 100 g 100 26
Tomato - Roma 1.5 222 53
Salad Onion 2 50 12
Black Pepper 2 g 2 1
Salt 2 g 2 0
Lemon 0.25 15 4
Olive Oil 2 tbsp 30 240
Burgers Qty for 7 For 2 For 2
Minced Rump Steak 500g 143 116
Red Onion 1 33 13
Garlic Clove 1 2 6
Bread Crumbs 3 slices 24 60
Egg 2 33 40
Salt 2 g 1 0
Pepper 2g 1 0
Flour 3 tbsp 9 24
.
Bun 2 106 200
Canola Oil (for cooking) 2 tbsp 30 248

The burger qualitities made 7 1/4lb burgers so i have put the weight in for 2 and the associated calories.

Meal for 2 equates to 1646 calories for 1367g in 2 servings so in total a whopping 120 Cal / 100g

Edited to correct quantities and calories on burgers (forgot to multiply by 2)

Mrs oilydan gave it a go...

Beer Braised Pork Knuckle.

Pork Knuckle 565
Bottle of Beer 220
Spuds 870
Carrots 110
Broccoli 25
Onion 70
Apple 75

Total 1935

Divided by 3 portions (2 adults and 2 kids) is a whopping 645 Cals per portion. But the crackle was worth it!
