My local chippy in Rochester, Kent...

Medium cod £4.00
Large cod £4.60

Medium chips £1.40
Large chips £2.20

So, large cod and medium chips is £6. (note: the medium chips portion is huge, more than enough for two people)
I'm just down the road in Rainham - similar prices. Very common "2 cod, 1 chips" because they're so huge!

£3.65 for a generous portion of chips, fish and copious amounts of "scraps" if desired.

That's in the Leeds area and jolly nice they are too.

I got the shock of my life when I bought fish and chips in Farnham last year, it was around £6.00 each, the portions were tiny and the batter was like concrete. I believe these people need to be introduced to the joys of deodorised beef dripping.

Typical chip portion size shown below with a couple of sausages and a free spam fritter because they were closing.

Anywhere from £3.50 to just over £5 depending on the chippy.

From our local chippy (edge of Cheltenham)

Mini Cod 8 inches long £2.50
Regular Cod 14 Inches £3.50
Large Cod (some type of whale) £4.00

Large chips £2.20 - enough to feed 4 including s starving 6' 3" teenager

TBH I think chippies could make the cod smaller to help preserve cod stocks, I bet lots of people throw quite a bit away. (Mrs blue can only manage a mini fish (no 8 inch jokes here please smile )

Fish and chip supper for 4 with curry sauce circa £16.00 or less if Mrs or I share fish with daughter

Do chippys usually charge for 'scraps'?

Never asked for them, I might do next time. I'm tempted with takeaway for tea tonight and this thread is making me want fish and chips, but I can't think of any around here that are open on a Sunday (except George's, but I've heard they're not great...)

small chips £1.50
Large chips £2

Cod. about £5.

Although some places will do the 'pensioner cod and chips' for under £4, but I've never bought this.

The large cod is rather big.

As much as I like it I can't help but think for the same price I can get a huge mixed kebab.

Local pub near me does fish (nice large bit of cod),chips and mushy peas with a home made tartare sauce for a crisp fiver on a friday night. Accompanied bya local real ale makes a great friday tea.

Alternatively for about the same I can add a cup of coffee to the mix (fish/chips/peas) from our local sit down chippy, then off to the local cinema where it's £5.50 a seat, still get an interval too and a person with the ices tray.

Yep it's up north - Cumbria.

I used to live near Whitby and would eat where the fishermen ate, proper white chunky steaming flakes of cod and a crunchy batter, chips done in beef dripping with china mugs of real tea, on the Quayside in any weather. In fact, theres something so special/northern about walking down Whitby Pier on a winters day shovelling vinegar soaked chips into your cake-hole while the waves break over the rail......magic !

I'm an ex chef too which makes me pretty fussy when it comes to eating out, even when it is just Fish n Chips. It can be such a ball-ache when on unfamiliar territory to queue for a 'cone' of underdone, or worse, yesterdays warmed-through chips.....and don't get me started on the fish - greasy, thin and grey with overdone batter....
Jesus ! You only cook one fking meal !! How can you keep getting it wrong !!!!

Having relocated though I've happily recently discovered a terrific, reliable family owned establishment serving a decent sized Cod, plenty of Chips and a choice of Mushy Peas or Curry Sauce for just £3.
All superbly cooked at The Hungry Fisherman in the lovely market town of Brigg in Lincolnshire.

Am I winning this one so far ?

£3 ?

Central Scotland - about £5.50-£7 for a "fish supper" depending on how posh you go. I did have one in Methil, Fife recently which amazed me. Bought two fish suppers and a bottle of juice and got change from a tenner - this is just a couple of miles round the coast from Anstruther too (famous for its expensive and highly popular chip shops).

Wtf is everyone eating cod for? Surely you all know better? Dirty, watery stuff with as much taste as tatty water. And about £5

Don't know what you mean by local as the clapham one has gone bust or closed down for good, that was Dec/Jan the last time I walked past and on the website I can't find any details of any shops that they have anymore?

Haddock is also a bottom feeder. As are halibut, plaice, sole, sea bass...
