A quick Aeropress question - I'm coming to the end of my paper filter pack and am toying with the idea of getting a metal filter instead. I'd looked on-line at a few and managed to find a site that reviewed many different metal filters against the standard paper filter, coming to the conclusion that one particular metal filter worked the best. Now I'll be buggered if I can find that website or indeed the metal filter! I know it cost £20 and that it was used in some world (?) championship and the one supplied would not come with the same world championship branding, but I'd recognise it in an instant. I've Google image searched various topics but not seen the filter I'd recognise - any ideas folks?

Sorry cqueen - not that one. the one I saw (on the vendors website) had a graphical image etched onto the disc - hence being able to recognise it. They did a on-off image for the champs (world or what I'm not sure) but their standard ones also (IIRC) come etched with a pattern. It's also not the S filter with the coffee drop etched onto the face.

Y'know - I think I may just have found it (after hours searching today at work when I should have been working!)
http://store.terrone.co.uk/product/superfine-metal...

Now I want to try and find the comparison of this filter with paper and other metal filters just to be sure!

that makes me angry. The whole point of the aeropress is that it's meant to be the antithesis of the 'more is better' bullst in coffee-making. Having a filter that costs more than the actual aeropress is frantically trying to inject this back in to the proposition. You get 300+ paper filters with the actual thing, and then a packet of that many is about a quid. The metal might be in some way 'cooler' but it makes no sense no matter what way you look at it, and you'll probably slice your finger trying to wash it, which of course you don't even need to do with paper. Silly.

Point taken many thanks - where can you get a set of 300+ filters for a quid? Amazon is about £3.99 for 350 plus postage on top of that.

Paper filters also filter out the oils whereas metal filters let them through, so a different taste. Whilst I initially baulked at paying what I did for the filter, I'm happy with the results. Knowing what I do now about the filter, I'm sure I could have got an identical one cheaper, but now I have one, it's not anything I want to worry about. I can pass details of the filter on to anyone that wants them though in case they want to search out a cheaper (identical) version.

Odd, I thought all the metal filters out there were fairly similar but the prices varied massively.. When I was looking for one I found two types, fine and superfine. Fine ones seem to allow a little bit of grinds through whereas the superfine ones don't. Still not ordered a metal one but might get one once my paper filters finish.

Maybe I underestimated at £1, however what is the actual point of a metal filter? How much coffee would you have to drink to make it worth it? Or am I missing something...

Thread resurrection!

Are the Bosch Tassimo machines worth a shout at the £35.00 currently being sold at Currys & John Lewis?

Love my Gaggia at home but a pod machine in the office would be nice if they're any good.

I've not yet bought a PROPER coffee machine but got given a percolator type for Christmas. Can anyone recommend some nice coffee to put in it. confused I take it black and strong. Something found in the supermarkets would be handy, at least to start.

saw a review recently where that Heston Blumenthal B2C espresso machine tore strips off of everything else in its bracket. It is £1800 though.

I've had one for about a year now. Aside from being the inkjet printer of the coffee world, they're not bad at all if you want a cup of something consistent. Worth experimenting a bit with the pods from the online shop to find the blends that suit you. Don't waste money on the Costa branded stuff for them - some of the imports are much better.

Give Taylor's Lava Java a try. Dark and rather potent!

I got a rather impressive coffee gift for christmas courtesy of the generous Santa in PHSS 2014.

Not had the chance to use any of it yet though as I've been too busy with work!

grinder is good, same as mine. strip it before you use it so you understand how it all fits together (not necessarily blindfolded... this is my weapon, i am nothing without it, it is nothing without me etc!), and how to adjust etc. Some people have discussed removing a plastic stop so you have full control over grind grade, but i haven't bothered. Lava Java is pretty full-on IMO tbh!
