I recently bought litre bottles of Morgans Spiced and Bacardi Oakheart as they are currently £14 in most supermarkets. I’m quite impressed with both of them as they work well for sipping and mixing. The initial taste of the Morgans almost made me choke but once it had rested in the glass for about 10 minutes it had opened up and mellowed nicely and the aroma was very nice. The Oakheart is sweeter than other rums I have tried and it worked well with a couple of cubes of ice. I think I will have to try the Angostura 1919 when I have a few quid spare as it looks rather good.

My fave at the moment is Sailor Jerry's. Goes well with Old Jamaica and a slice o' lime. The wife doesn't like the taste of that, so will tend to buy Appleton's. An agreement can be found with Mountgay and sometimes Cockspur's if that is not available. Tried Kraken - not a massive fan, slightly too dark for me.

Any recommendations for the best rum you can buy for up to £30?

Idealy something slightly more interesting than standard supermarket fare smile
Appleton 8 is well worth a bash if you can locate some. The supers tend to have just the XV expression which is just not in the same league.

I get the 8 mailorder , but if you are London way, I'd imagine the likes of the whisky exchange would have it on the shelf.

I'm thinking of doing some experimenting in the new year with spiced rums. .

Get a half bottle of one of the cheaper rums, and measure some out into jars and then infuse with cinnamon and/or vanilla for 3 days, then blend or try the individual results.

Could be interesting. biggrin

Still corked and got the paper seal in place (just),.

Dad always said it was rescued from his Grandfathers cellar when it flooded once,.

Reckon it's worth keeping or drinking ? drink

No idea how old it is,. sadly Dad isn't around any more to ask,.

Nice collection but no Mount Gay and no El Dorado.

Which is your favourite in your list?

I finished my bottle of el dorado last month. Not had mount gay for a long while.

Favourite on list is real tough one- I would say Havana seleccion or Zacapa 23. (XO doesn't justify the massive jump in price)

As a mixing rum I enjoy a Pampero anniversario but most likely to drink Havana especial or Kracken as they are two of very few rums my local bar stocks.

Angostura 1919, although i might be slightly biased as have family from Trinidad it is an award winning rum, Chairmans reserve is nice and a few ££ cheaper. That might be as far as they push the boat out and every other rum on offer is probably your more popular brands so if thats the case you might have to settle for 2 bottles at that price wink

Currently I have:

Carcardi Oakheart, which I like more than I feel I should do. It's a very nice mixer.
Sailor Jerry's, which I think is a little too sweet

And that's all at the moment, I might need to top it up. I'd suggest the following:
Havana 7 or if you are in Duty Free Havana Barrel Proof which is the best they do.
Pampero Especial is also a fave around the house

If you are ever able to try Legendario, do not pass up the offer. It's hard to come by, but also the finest I've ever had (although I do have a little bit of a sweet tooth).

Also in the cabinet is a bottle of Herradura Reposado Tequila for those moments when you fancy something a little more punchy than a rum, but don't quite 'get' whisky.

Well Santa (girlfriend and her parent's) was very good to me this year:

Her parent's brought back a bottle of Matusalem for me:

My girlfriend bought me a bottle of Rumbullion too:

Finally I bought a bottle of Havana Club for mixing:

I've built quite a collection of rum now, I may need some assistance with drinking it!

Our local Aldi still has a few bottles of the El Derado 15yo - but now they are marked down to £30 - incredible.
Think another may appear on my shelf tomorrow. Doesn't help that they hide them in a silly place - nobody sees them - but would they all appreciate what is on offer.

well.... having bought a bottle of havana club 7 purely cause I wanted something alcoholic to drink and as it was on offer, it got bought.

and I have to say, i have my spirits in the freezer if I am drinking it neat, and this, is utterly brilliant, and so smooth, and tasty and just yum.

at 18 quid, I think It was a bargin, even if I could have got it cheaper I dont care, it has become my new have 'neat' spirit.

I really want to try the rumbullien posted a couple of posts up.

is there any really really good rum, kinda like the havana club 7 that I can try that isnt too much money, im looking to spend not more than 30 quid as it will be drunk in a couple to 3 days.

Per my comment above - re-check your local Aldi. The stock in mine isn't shifting (apart from with help from me) - yours may already have sold out.

at 30quid, get the el dorado 15 from aldi. i have yet to try anything that betters it for my palate.

my dream rum is a more robust and smooth myers's, el dorado is closest to this ideal.

bought my dad a bottle of 15 for xmas and he is now a big fan. also made a big impression on his pussers 15yo which came with the trafalgar decanter from his brother. sadly no time to order a bottle myself.

picked up a flor de cana 18 for 30euros on the way home though, so no complaints. i did have to leave the 1986 flagon of lambs i bought as had no room in the case wth all the whisky i was carrying back!

hows the rumbullion btw? the whole ampleforths range looks intriguing.
