Has anyone used Rum Auctioneer before? @Sy, I imagine you're more on the supply side with your collection! hehe

I gave it a go for some low price stuff last night. You have to pay a £6 fee to get an account. All prices that you're bidding on are ex tax, buyers fee and shipping. The auction "finished" at 7pm, but with the proviso that a bid would keep the auction going for another 2 minutes. I thought this was per item, but no, any bid on any item will keep the entire action live.

At 6pm I had a bid on a few low priced ones and a couple of bottles of Hampden 17 Year Old that were languishing at £30 (like I need more Hampden) but these eventually made above £80. So I got:

  • A bottle of Husk 2020, an Australian "agricole" maker that I really enjoyed when I was out there and only have a sip left. Hammer price £19
  • A bottle of Renegade single plot agricole - I've wanted to try their stuff for a while. Hammer price £35
So £54 but with taxes, charges, taxes, delivery and taxes on taxes, this ended up at £83. laugh Shipping is £12 for the 1st and only an extra £1 a bottle after, so it's cheaper to buy more, right? The two ~ bottles I bought (a later Husk vintage) are for sale on Masters of Malt and you'd pay £103 delivered.

So kinda fun and maybe worth it, but as I swim at the <£80 a bottle end of the pool maybe not that much interesting stuff for me.

Interesting to see loads of the FourSquare ECS selling in the £60-80 range (~£78-104 before shipping) so something to explore next time. smile

I've bid on loads of stuff but never actually purchases from them.

A lot of the FS stuff that sells below the £100 mark is the ones that were available in higher quantities. I'm still after some more Zin cask but they were all EU based and ended up a bit silly when all the fees were added.

The 1998 went for £9500 which is wild when it retailed at £37.

I really like renegade rums, tried their full portfolio at The Rum Show.

I used to drink a lot of whisky, and at various times had a reasonable collection. But then it dwindled and eventually I reached a point where I just had one bottle at a time and perhaps wasn't enjoying it quite as much.

Anyway a friend has pushed me down the rum route. It's interesting trying, and learning about, a new drink though I'm not sure yet if I feel it matches whisky for complexity, challenge and general interest. The smooth sweetness is nice though.

Anyway I currently have these three, they're all nice enough and pretty easy to drink but I like the Ron Abuelo the most. It's the most intense, dark and rich and has a slight hint of whiskyness to it.

As a category it significantly outstrips whisky for complexity and challenge I'd say. From a Mount Gay from Barbados to a Cane Juice Rum from Oaxaca and if you want a challenge have a bash at an un-aged cask strength Hampden DOK.

+1 for challenge and complexity. biggrin

Try a Martinique Grand Arome rum - very strong notes of salami and salty olives to go with your overripe banana and grilled pineapple.

Or a Clarin from Haiti - mental. A whisky friend of mine asked if it was fit for human consumption on first smell.

Or some Brazilian cachaça - they age them in woods from the rainforest like Amburana which leads to some really unexpected flavours for an aged spirit.

I was gifted this at Christmas and think it’s delicious. Undertones of treacle and very smooth.

Just got back from Barbados with a little haul.

The Doorly's 12 was an early birthday gift from family, and seems to be the premium choice of the locals now that Remy have turned the once Mount Gay Extra Old into a "premium product" and spoilt it/doubled the price.

The Old Brigand is what the locals (at least in my circle of family and friends) are mixing in places of the cheaper mount gay options - mostly with soda water - and sometimes with soda water and a splash of coke (known as swamp water hurl)

The Equiano is a new one for me - it's extremely smooth and tasty. We picked that up duty free on the way out.

All are from the Foursquare distillery

Quite a stack! Are you looking to corner the market in that Velier Royal Navy release? biggrin

Good to see some Husk there too - I think it's a bargain for what it's passing through that auction at.
