The Black Boy. Milton, nr Bloxham.
Wheelers of St James / Marco.
Great food, and large portions. Wine list good, but Melbec slightly harsh.
Staff slightly "Banbury"
Interior design dark, not befitting the building.
I would go back again for the food.
8 / 10

Went to Castle Terrace in Edinburgh yesterday for the set lunch. Fantastic place with great service and only £26.00 for three courses. Not long been awarded a Michelin Star.

nice restaurants.

Last night I went to Marco Pierre White's Wheeler's of St James near green park tube station. The food was very good, I was expecting tiny portions, but in fact I had a bigger steak and more triple cooked chips than I could shake an onion ring at. It was also surprisingly inexpensive for what it was of the place, plus added tastecard discount.

I've never had a waiter apologise for us having to top up our own wine glasses or had such a large table for just two people. This is probably one of the 'nicest' restaurants I personally have been to so I don't have much to compare it to. The woman next to us was pretty furious that her Eton Mess didn't look like what she expected Eton Mess to look like...

Anyway, I'd give it 8/10.
You can't describe something as 'nice', it doesn't mean much and is probably more of an insult to good food than anything else.....

Last one I went into was in Vienna on Saturday evening - Kulinarium 7.

Was a strange experience - I booked it because of the recommendations on Trip Advisor.
I really wouldn't book on the advice found on trip advisor IME

Here's Bristol...do you think there could be better places to eat than the top ten?

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g186220-B...

No10 is a tiny curry house in BS3, which used to be a greasy spoon. Twas quite nice for food when it opened, but sadly (as usual) has fallen in standards when open for a month or so. Even so, is a tiny ex cafe on Coronation rd the 10th best place to eat in Bristol?

Not even close.

Looking forward to it. I like industrial buildings and I like food.
well the food was good but nothing special I would say.

Mains were about 20 quid each - for that I do expect some sort of meaningful side dish to go with the (nice) beef shoulder. not just a slab of beef with about 10 peas. That gripe aside it was nice.

The chicken broth starter, again, was good but I expect more than 3 bits of chicken in the broth for £8.50 and not just a bowl of broth.

The pear tart was nice but slightly insipid - nothing special.

I'd give it a 6/10. At 70 quid a head I felt a little deflated when we left.

The building itself is very special indeed - all the old pumping equipment remains, chains hung up from the roof, exposed brick etc and the place is lit with candles which was nice. there is also an art gallery which I didnt have time to look at (which was probably just as well as one review on the internet alleged the owner forcibly ejected one patron from the gallery when they didnt leave when instructed the place was closing!)

I went to Ottos on the grays inn road. it was superb. Otto the owner is clearly an eccentric and loves what he does.

the wine was fantasic value(they have a 10 quid fixed mark up on a lot of the bottles) and the food superb - particuarly the hare I had..

I did post here whether anyone had been (and it seems not) and I really would recommend it as something quite different in central london

Thanks for the tip. Was struggling for a new destination for dinner last night and they happened to have a table free. Dinner was stunning, wine great value and Otto was on great form.

I must have walked past the restaurant dozens of times on my way to others nearby and never paid any attention to it. Gets my vote!

I have very low-brow tastes when it comes to restaurants/eateries.

Last three places I ate include The hungry Horse, Cosmos and a local all-you-can-eat Oriental place.

Thoroughly enjoyed Cosmos, although I ate too much. Food was well prepared and a great range.

Hungry Horse was offered up a very well prepared steak (perfect medium-rare - just as ordered - erring on rare). Nice atmosphere and cheap as chips.

Hongxin Oriental Buffet was disappointing. Food somewhat tough. Dessert selection very much a Tesco off-the-shelf selection, with fruit that wasn't ripe.

Flame away, if you must.

My local. The Junction Hotel in The Junction, Newcastle, Australia.

Wednesday night. Had the roasted red emperor with seared scallops, fennel, caperberry and rocket salad.

Excellent, high quality, well priced pub food.

The Bunch of Grapes - Pontypridd.

Starter, Cold meat platter.
Main, Venison,
Dessert, Chocolate fondant.

Easily some of the best restaurant food I have had in my memory. 9/10 (loses a point because wine took a while to come.) Apart from that, I recommend to anyone in the area who has not been!!!

Turl Street Kitchen (Turl St, Oxford)

Main - Fish & Chips
Side - Curly Kale
Dessert - Choc brownie

Fish and chips was lovely. Homemade tartar sauce and the batter was lovely and crunchy.

Choc brownie was also delish.

Menu changes daily so always plenty to choose from.

the lighting was not bright by any means(if you want that go to mcdonalds). I would say the lighting suited the type of restaurant it is. If Im spending over £100 on a meal I lirke the restaurant to be a bit dimmer giving a more intimate atmosphere.
Agreed. I too prefer dim lighting when I'm being fked.

King's Head - Ivinghoe

Quite simply a 1970s monstrosity.

Average food, average service, average price.

Had the Aylesbury duck (for 2 to share) and ended up taking most of it home for the cats.

Absolutely zero desire to ever return there.

3/10.

Try the Vanilla Pod just down the road, then get yourself over to Caldesi's in Bray, both very good.

I work in Maidenhead and drive through Bray every day to and from work. Where is Caldesi's in relation to the HH or Fat Duck?

Head towards the Waterside (Fat Duck and turn left towards the river), just before you get wet turn right and it's on the left.

I’ve just gotten back to my desk, after a lunch at the Chiswell Street Dinning Rooms in London. Its a decent place, and part of the same set up as the Motcalm Hotel and the Jugged Hare (I tried both of these agin last week and can recommend).

Today I had the Roast Duck and Foie Gras, it was okay, but the duck to fois gras ratio was way off. Main was an 8oz burger and chips; the meat was cooked as I like it (rare), but overall quite disappointing.
Desert continued the theme of well presented, but poorly flavoured food, but at least the Malbec was decent.

Overall the experience was reasonable for £80 per head, but I would have expected better following a sfew recent and excellent visits to their sister restraint the Jugged Hare.
