*THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT ARE AS FOLLOWS*

  • One entry per person, which must be cooked within competition time frame.
  • No more than 3 photos to be entered unless stated by the theme setter.
  • Food must be prepared by yourself as much as possible (IE not putting a pre packed goat curry in the microwave).
  • The competition will run until the last Sunday of the month, once the new theme has been set by the last winner.
  • The poll will commence ASAP preferably the Monday and voting will last for a week.
The theme for this month is Rich Man, Poor Man. The challenge is to create a dish where the key ingredients are one luxury ingredient and one 'poor man's' ingredient. This could be a starter, main or dessert.

The closing date for entries is Sunday 28th April
The subsequent poll will run until Sunday 5th May

I may not find enough time to enter this month but if I do I will probably look to do something with black pudding, matching it with either king scallops or foie gras.

I guess the competition is all about how we each interpret the challenge and I'm quite interested to see how everybody approaches it. When I think of poor mans' ingredients I think of things like pig trotters, pork/beef/fish cheeks, offal, black pudding, fish like pollack, carbs like polenta and so on, but please don't be limited to my interpretation.

Right got a couple of ideas on the boil at the moment, however I'm discounting one on the fact that said ingredient cost £24.50 per 500g!!!!!! yikes

Good chance for me to use the foie gras I brought back from France... just got to decide on a poor man's ingredient!

Reminder that the closing date is this Sunday. I hope I haven't nerfed the new momentum with an unpopular theme paperbag

I just haven’t had time for this one. Looking forward to seeing what others come up with though, it’s really interesting theme.

I also will have to duck out of this one; simply haven't had time as am travelling a lot with work.

My suggestion would be to cook up a biriyani with saffron as the luxury ingredient and mutton or hogget on the bone as the cheap component.

Good luck to everyone who enters.

Well I didn't make it in the end, I've had too much on my plate so too speak to get round to it.

My plan was the do "Fish n Chips" Pollock in a champaign batter with thick cut tripe cooked chips and pea pure.

Who was the runner up last month? Perhaps they'd offer a theme for April?

Ive got an idea but before I embark on it would you consider beef short ribs to be 'poor man's' or not?? Pretty cheap cut in the butchers..

Thanks

Just looked at the survey results and it was a tie between Dozygit and SVX I think.

Maybe they would like to set one between them?
