Just came back from shake shack and it was fing delicious! I had the double shack burger with fried and a caramel shake. They had ran out of cheese sauce so I had to get the normal fries.

The burger it self had a prefect balance of fat and meat ratio, for me it beat Gourmet burger and Byron burger hands down on taste and tenderness with the American cheese and the soft bun topping it off!

The fries were meh, nothing special tbh but nevertheless still nice and the shake was decent too. My sister had the Shroom burger (vegie) which consisted of a fried, stuffed with cheese portobello mushroom, I had a bite and that and that tasted amazing too.

There were some questionable pricing such as £2.50 for a small soft drink or the fries but will def be visiting it again as it tasted so damn nice. Next stop five guys!

fiveguys in reading opened last night!

not heard anything, i'll give it a week so that the staff figure out what they're doing and to let any initial queues go down, tho it looks a pretty big place.

I'm up in the Big Smoke for a couple of nights with work. I decided that I *needed* a Five Guys so I went to Covent Garden. The queue was out the door at 1945! Haven't not eaten all day, I had a bacon double cheeseburger (£8.75) with the 'All the way' salad stuff, medium fries (a small would've done me to be honest) at £4.00 and a soft drink at £2.50 (free refills). I'll be honest-it was just as good as the ones I've had in the states and the portion sizes were very big. It was a pleasant surprise.

I doubt I'll try Shake Shack tomorrow night though as I wasn't that impressed with the one I had in New York a few months ago but I shall make a command decision tomorrow evening!

I went there last week at lunchtime and had pretty much the same experience except the queue wasn't so big.

Very authentic except for you are paying £ instead of $.

Very photogenic burger there, almost like the marketing shots, other burger chains take note.

It does seem, from the excellent reviews here, that they cost a lot though compared to the USA. Perhaps that is the London hype effect. But they are treading on gastro burgers area there.

Shake shack's crinkle cut fries, they must be mass produced and cost them $1 per hundredweight.... hmmmm.

That shack shack thing looks fking st.

I tried to get into five guys the other night, was 10 mins too late though as it shut at midnight. I have however since been back to Patty&Bun which I doubt any other can beat, it was amazing.

There are a number of reasons (off the top of my head) that it is significantly more expensive:

- Higher labour costs
- Higher raw product costs [generally more expensive produce on our little island, plus lower economies of scale as do not have vast statewide/nationwide supplier deals they must have in the US]
- Higher rental costs [both 5G and SS have absolutely prime real estate in central London]
- Brand/intangible costs - there is a five page thread on the Food and Drink sub-forum of a UK-based motoring site - do not underestimate the power of the brand in making people pay.

Went to the reading fiveguys last night with some friends - seems we don't have anything like the London queues, 8 of us just walked straight in at about 6:45.

I don't think many people are up for spending £12 on a burger, (lots of) fries, and novelty coke around these parts.

Burger was tasty but not amazing (cheeseburger, all the way), fries were nice tho and huge portion. Don't know why they use the cups when they just fill up the brown paper bag anyway! Wanted a bigger burger tho. Most of the coke machine flavours didn't seem to go down too well. Will be going back next week just to make sure smile

Finally got around to trying Coventry Garden this lunchtime.

No queue at all just before 1:00pm. Really great burger, great burgers and good as it can be diet pop. Reasonably loud Black Sabbath etc,............I mean what's not to like.......oh, the cost. I wasn't paying so just about spot on. Not quite sure how many calories but I'm eating 'light' this evening!

Went to 5 guys for lunch today and found it massively underwhelming.

The fries were laced with way too much salt. The burger was dry and bland (would have preferred medium-rare) and the decor of the place is uninteresting. It is basically one step up from McDonalds.

For the same price at Byron/GBK you can choose how you want it cooked, get table service and apply your own salt to the fries.

yikes HOW MUCH!

Chuff me. How much is a big mac and all the trimmings in MaccyD's these days? Gourmet Burget Kitchen and whatnot are a bit more up-market, and I doubt you'd pay that much in one of them.

Finally got around to going Five guys and I have to say it was massively disappointing! After salivating for ages watching daym drops review and all the recent hype I was really looking forward to this place and to be fair I've had my fair share of burgers, so I know when I see a crap one.

Firstly I did a mistake of forgetting to order the burger with cheese, the place had such loud music that I couldn't even hear myself or even think what I was ordering. I ended up ordering the bacon cheese burger with fries and the refillable drink.

The burger itself looked okay, I generally order my burger medium-well but they didn't give a option and the burger was cooked well done, for my taste it was too dry. The bacon itself was extremely crispy to a point where you actually couldn't taste the bacon and the bun was falling apart after only eating a 1/4 of the burger but tbh I don't really care that much about the points I mentioned, for me the worst part of this burger was the smell of the beef patties. Going for each bite I could smell a distinctly fatty cow smell which just put me off, initially I thought it could be the bacon but my friend who had ordered the normal burger without bacon noticed it too, really put me off tbh and even after washing my hand I could still smell it.

Another negative point was the fries, tbh it wasn't that crispy and it tasted more like a baked potato rather than french fries.

For me Shake Shack was the better out of the two, I might try Five Guys again and get a actual cheese burger as I feel I cheated the place by forgetting to get a cheese burger but no doubt Shake Shack is my new favourite burger joint.

I've done them both now too and not impressed with either tbh but concur with Shake Shack been the better of the two. Went for the bacon cheeseburger each time and found them both very greasy but preferred the bun and taste of the burger at SS. Five Guys you get a double burger as standard though the patties are very thin and as mentioned well over cooked and then wrapped in the worse bun I've ever eaten and I left half the chips.

£14.25 for a burger, fries and drink of that quality is a joke when you can go to Burger King and get the same for £10 less. They are not even in the same league as the likes of Byron or Honest burger.

If using a napkin is a novelty for you then Five Guys will be considered posh.
