Other people seem to have gotten on OK?

Would like a setup like what you have, but no space for it frown

The Lager kits are a disappointment, they just do not turn out like Lager. The IPA, wheat beer kits are fine. I used to use a Muntons kit and add coriander and orange zest to it, it was superb, although not quite like Hoegaarden. If your kit is clean and sterile, you wont make a beer that is undrinkable,it might not be an award winner, but it wont be chucked away either.

I remember my Grandad making cider from the apples grown in their garden. Not the actual process, just taking sacks of apples (to be juiced) to a local press/-ing place. All you need is apple juice, sugar and some active dry yeast, right? Plus bottles etc.
How hard can it be? scratchchin

Well I have never drank Cooper's lager, so I will not know whether it is right or wrong biggrin.

How do I sterilise new kit?

There are a few ways, some more expensive than others, Bleach, Milton products, Starsan are just a few. 'The Homebrew For Dummies' book is a really good starting place if your new to it all.
