Rack of lamb in the fridge we were going to have tomorrow, just noticed its use by date is the 21st. Looks okay still, can't smell anything, but it's meat so is it a bit risky?

One day should be OK - it is not an exact science - I imagine the manufacturers will allow a short buffer as well to be safe.

That said, the FSA do say you cannot just rely on eyes and nose as many issues cannot be picked up that way

If it smells ok, eat it.

However, if you don't feel that you can rely on your own nose, get a cat. Cats won't eat anything that's remotely 'off'.

Cheers, no cat at hand so I'll have to judge it myself

If that were true, the human race would have died out long before "use by" dates were brought in!

What is not true - the FSA advice?

I daresay years ago meat would have smelt a bit more whiffy as it wasn't in the fridge.

haha.

but yes, smell it.

I don't trust chicken in this way (maybe I'm just being a fanny), if its past the date its out, but red meat, no problem.

Chicken seems to smell off very, very quickly though.
