I'm obviously getting old but I think the popularity of the place is massively linked to social media and in particular twitter, a quick search shows #nandos has a massive amount of activity.

With the black card (I believe) the “celebrities” tweet about their trip to their millions of followers, Nando’s get a load of advertising they couldn’t buy and kids want to go there.

Nandos have been very shrewd in their use of social media and have managed to be very successful with an at best average product!

I ended up with a mouthful of pink chicken last time I was there, got a voucher for a free meal (would have rather had my money back) but it did worry me little that they couldn’t get right their primary product!

Clever bit of marketing but without wanting to sound too much of a restaurant snob what level of celebrity goes for a free Nandos rather than paying for something fancier?

Nandos - KFC for the middle classes. Nothing to write home about.
This. A restaurant that looks nice but you get no better service than you would expect in any other fast food restaurant.

I agree it's quite expensive for what it is but I looooove Nandos.

Never been to a Nando's but my lad wants to try as a few of his mates have been and raved about it so I said we'd go as part of my birthday celebrations.

Having read this, I'm regretting it and if it's on a par with Frankie and Bennie's (never had a good experience & meal whenever I've been dragged there) then I definitely won't bother.
oops, your screwed.
Haven't had a nandos in a few years, i remember liking it but i'm not sure where all the hype has come from.
It is just fast food, don't get your hopes up for a nice restauant meal, but treat it the same as anywhere you pay for your food in advance and you'll be fine.
Not expecting Michelin stars but thought it was slightly upmarket from F&B's/Harvester etc but thats not what I'm reading here. Won't make it a big part of the birthday then - just going for a meal.

Hype?

By hype I assume you mean all the customers who go there and love it. They don't do much in the way of advertising.

I go from time to time and I've always enjoyed the food. It's not Michelin starred but the experience is certainly better than KFC. They sell alcohol for a start.
I guess the quality varies from branch to branch but if you don't like it, tell the manager or contact Nando's, they'll certainly change things if enough people complain.

I frequent (as in go every couple of months on average) three branches and I've never had an issue with food or staff.

I go very occasionally - when I pop in it's usually as an alternative to eating in the pub. I find the chicken pretty good and with a couple of sides and a beer usually pay £15 or so which puts it at about the same price point as a pub meal too.

I wouldn't get over excited about it but I've not left disappointed before either.

I am always impressed by how busy they are and the turnover. They must be making a fortune.

It's bad enough that they serve up vast quantities of dodgy (from an ethical rather than food poisoning point of view) chicken, but the Epsom branch seriously needs to overhaul its extraction system, as walking past the place on the pavement outside is utterly repugnant!

Seriously what's wrong with everyone?!

There is no hype, it is just enjoyed by the younger generation. (Maybe why so many on here dislike it) wink

It is nothing like KFC, nor is it meant to be.

It is not trying to be some top notch restaurant. It's just a simple in and out place.

It's staff are purely there to bring you the food. Are some people expecting a detailed description of each 'dish' put in front of them?

It does taste good and most of the target audience won't care if the chicken is cooked from fresh on the grill.

You've all missed the best bit about Nandos: they serve Superbock.

KFC is nothing like Nandos.

We have both nearby and I prefer Nandos over a KFC anyday.

We normally go there when neither of use wants to cook so its short notice so we pck up the little one and head there. Get sat, get fed, get out.

Our local one is always busy, always has a good atmosphere and its always clean too. It might only be one up from the likes of KFC but thats fine by me smile

The celebrities mentioned in this thread are exactly the sort of people I could imagine going to Nando's irrespective of whether it was free.

I wonder whether Tulisa and N-Dubz ever had a black card.

Personally I hate chicken, find it pretty bland, and would rather eat my own leg than go anywhere near the greasy, heartburn-inducing mutant rat meat they serve up at KFC.

Yet I frigging love Nando's. Only ever have Extra Hot Wings, normally a portion of 5 with another 3 on the side. Glorious.

(i've also had 3 chicken wings for dessert as well. Not proud, but they were damn tasty).

A couple of things which haven't been mentioned yet:

- The Nandos card is one of the best loyalty cards out there, 1.75 chickens for 10x £7 spends. It actually works out cheaper to order separately for 2 people to get 2 stamps rather than 1.
- There's usually always a hot waitress there smile

Ahhh yes. There's always at least one hot waitress and normally a good few hot girls eating there.

I also get 20% off everything. wink
