I'm in France at the moment. I come to France many times each year, and whilst I'm not a particularly fussy eater, I do know to avoid andouillette. About 4 hours ago, I ordered a cassoulet d'agneau which arrived, without warning, with ingredients including an obvious andouillette sausage. I removed this to a side plate and ate the rest (which was fine).

4 hours later, back in my chateau, in my bed, I can still smell it. Why oh why does anyone human think that andouillette is a good, or tasty, or wholesome thing?

It's a French haggis - for real men only.

I live in Lyon (the home of Andouillette). Purchased once, never eaten and never to be eaten again...

Boiled, andouillette is disgusting beyond belief.

But, give it a chance.

Sliced crossways, given a Caribbean spice treatment, skewered and BBQd, it is actually quite nice.

If it's "eat andouilette or hand in your man-card at the door" then I'm afraid I'll be shopping in Dorothy Perkins from here on in! If I really fancy a st sausage then I'm sure my dog will serve me up one for far less than €20!

It smells (and tastes) like what it previously contained.

Shiite.

Quite horrible. I will eat almost anything but not andouilettes. The smell alone puts me off.

Googled. . . . and you end up with the most annoyingly English of words . . . "nice", with "quite" added for effect.

I know you appreciate good foods MC. So I'll avoid if that's ok. wink

Love them - Mrs NW's mother (French) makes them.

Slice and fry like Black Pudding, great with plum tomatoes and fried bread

Revolting. Ordered once, as I am generally brave food-wise and we were in France. Nope. Ate the chips.

I ordered andouillete in France once, in the restaurant in the village where my folks have a place - they know the owner/chef v. well, and I've met him a few times.
He came out of the kitchen to tell me "you *really* do not want that, please order something else".

Looking it up afterwards, I remain eternally grateful. hurl

Had this in Paris, maybe it wasn't quite the real deal or had been watered down for the tourists, but it didn't seem overly powerful or revolting. Definitely had a whiff about it!

The Tourraine region (around Tours) is famous for it's Andouillette sausage. We have to be VERY careful when eating out.

The real stuff smells very strong. It has that spicy, protein rich smell that is quite reminiscent of still-slimy dog st. You'd know it if you had it.

Ordering andouillette is a mistake you only make once. It looked so good on the menu, but that could have been my poor attempts at translation or the lying French waiter who said it was good.

It's almost palatable when barbecued. Almost.

Just googled it, Wikipedia says:

"True andouillette is rarely seen outside France and has a strong, distinctive odor related to its intestinal origins and components. Although sometimes repellant to the uninitiated, this aspect of andouillette is prized by its devotees."

So it's mainly for copropahges then.

I have eaten anything, ate Andouillette a couple of times , it's repugnant. And hint, Tripes a la Mode contain it. Be afraid !
