Sounds a fun concept. I love playing the foriegn-aisle tin can lottery in supermarkets, always get a surprise. Sometimes nice.

But this is in Soho. A Gazillion people passing every day, loads of them with free time and cash to burn.
It doesn't appeal to me but if the food's good, unusual and also pretty difficult to find elsewhere it will do well.
You could also generate interest by surreptitiously advertising the new business on a major online forum with a large readership of the right demographic based in the London area.

Oh wait... whistlewink

"AL_A presents tincan, a six month restaurant project in Soho.
While designing a new cultural centre in Lisbon, the team from architectural practice AL_A discovered a former fishing tackle shop which was transformed into a tiny, vibrant restaurant serving only tinned seafood. What started as lunch quickly became an idea, and subsequently a new project: to bring the culture and sensibility of an architect's studio to a restaurant serving the best tinned fish in the world.
Tincan elevates the humble tin to an object of desire in an environment designed by AL_A. Everything in the restaurant from light fittings and wall displays, to tables and chairs, will be created specifically for the space.
The idea is very compelling: no kitchen, the finest tinned seafood delicacies, super healthy, and great graphics with the tin as the hero."

An example menu would help as well.
Surely half the fun (& the intended premise?) would be spending time browsing the selection of produce that's on display. Much more fun than staring at a PDF whilst your on the bog! smile

I love the idea and I'm going to visit.

How is it served? Do you get it served in the tin with some bread, or is it plated up with a garnish?
Read the links provided:

"Tincan does not have a kitchen, food will be served in tin-cans."
That doesn't really answer the question though. They could still be giving you plates and some bread or whatever.

The whole concept is just sounding a bit too novelty for me. If I want a tin of something I'll go to a supermarket. If I want someone to cook me a nice lunch I'll go to a restaurant. For me personally, I don't see any real crossover opportunity there.
You would assume if he has no kitchen then there will be no bread, garnish or plates, but I guess there are other ways around it and agreeably a bit of bread and salad etc would be a good accompaniment.
From what I understand he is serving up imported speciality food which you can't buy at your local supermarket and it is novelty food and the idea has a lifespan, how long that will be remains to be seen, but it is good to get out and do something different for a change.

Tincan: A restaurant in Soho serving the finest tinned seafood in the world
Wow, very brave.
That probably ranks as a the last restaurant in the world I would visit, just after the Spam 'n' Corned beef restaurant.

Genuinely wish you luck though and desperately hope you prove me wrong with that

Sounds like a great idea OP, I've never had top quality tinned fish, but I can imagine it's excellent. Sad to see some of the world's top food critics have descended on this thread to poo-poo the idea because they don't like the tinned crap they get in their local supermarket. Good luck with it, I'd have come down myself if I wasn't at the other end of the country.

the restaurant i have no opinion of. not for me but i've seen pop ups operating on far more tenuous business ideas.

i know several architects. they can never just come out and say 'oh we're going to do this because it sounds/looks cool'. they always have to justofy thigns in the most wky way possible. tits.
