Google 'Arthur Boyt' - he's a mad old adopted uncle to a friend's children. This guy will eat anything - fox, badger, labrador... redface

I can't imagine that a diet of omnivores or apex predators would do you much good in the long term, but in the case of a short-term survival need then I'd give almost anything a go, with the notable exception of insects, or my own pets.

I suspect we 'ought' to eat less intensive meat/animal products like insects and small, fast growing animals like rats but I'm a bit stuck in my ways and like good old beef, lamb, pork and chicken - even shellfish is a bit fancy for my liking.
Apart from horse, is there any major 'food' animal that's enjoyed elsewhere that we miss out on?
Yes. The bits of our existing food animals that we don't consider as 'food', although I'm sure it all goes into burgers and sausages.

The freezer section at Chinese supermarkets is really quite enlightening. I'm sure there must be uses for pig uterus or cow omentum (one of it's many stomachs), but I must admit that none are particularly coming to mind.

I'm sure my dog would have an opinion on that smile

That's where we go wrong. If stuff is tasty we'll find a way of farming it for profit. If we ate pandas, tigers and rhinos then there'd be millions of them. If chickens weren't tasty they might be extinct by now.

This doesn't work for whales, because of course you can't farm them, but tigers should be an everyday meal.

Woodlice are meant to taste like prawns...
Prawns are basically aquatic insects. If you're allergic to crustaceans (prawns, crab etc), you're also allergic to insects. It's a shame, because I would be game to try something like fried crickets, but the possibility of going into anaphylactic shock is an issue.

we should only eat the tasty ones, all others are safe.

if i knew my cat tasted like cattle i would deffo be changing her diet and upping the belly rubs so she'd be a wagyu cat.
