Best steak I've ever had in London (regularly) is boudin Blanc in Mayfair. It's not a steak 'place' but is a French restaurant that is consistent and excellent.

Been to the hawksmoor and gaucho - both nowhere near the above.

I completely agree with you - in general. However this is one night out of 3 and the other two will give us some privacy. The reason for choosing Beast was to do something new for both of us, and it's conveniently close to where we're staying. It looks like it should be a memorable meal, prices look on a par with the others mentioned so far.

After 15 years and having me to herself for 3 days, maybe she will want some company anyway!
So rather like the other Goodman's and Hawksmoor are well ahead. CUT at 45 Park Lane is good but my personal favourite this year has actually been Mash near Piccadilly Circus, I was very impressed and that's after eating in Goodman's and Hawksmoor over 50 times.

With regards to Beast, I would say it is very good but actually a terrible place for a couple. Firstly, the main event is the crab and not the steak. It's a fixed menu at £75 iirc, but wine isn't cheap and I think we were over £150 a head for fairly basic wine and not getting really drunk. The biggest problem for a couple though is that the table are MASSIVE. They are benches but because some of the expected guests are going to be well fed men the proportions of the table are insane. You could sit two 30st guys next to each other and they wouldn't be clashing elbows. However, the tables need to be large to accommodate the enormous serving plates but this means the table are incredibly wide. When I went the first time it was 3 of us and the guy sat opposite could barely hear what we were saying. Honestly it was a farce.

Apparently it was meant to be fine dining, but the owner decided last minute to change it to bench seating after eating with the Norwegian fishermen where the crab comes from. The crab however is AMAZING. They told us it costs 4 times as much as Lobster on the wholesale market and these things are massive. I'd never seen anything like them before.

If you do go, ask to be sat next to each other than opposite, honestly I think it would be better. Also don't go overboard on the (pretty average) cheese started. The staff were great and incredibly accommodating when we asked for extras. They will offer extra sides but we asked for extra crab and they brought us a full portion for 3 people again! The crab really is the winner.

If you do go I'm sure you'll love the food but we actually commented it would be one of the worst date places you could ever take someone!! Good luck!

Nonsense, both of these are good but there are other places too + as pointed out Hawksmoor are inconsistent Air street particularly.

Mash do a very good steak and as an 'off piste' suggestion the best steak I have had recently was here http://peyoterestaurant.com/index/

For me it is CUT at 45 Park Lane. Can't say I love the room (the tables for 2 on the right hand side by the window are the best for couples) but the quality of the steak is the best i've eaten in London. Hawksmoor is also very, very good but i've found it to be better at some branches than others. Can't go wrong at Goodman either.
The worst by a country mile is STK.

I've not been to a high end London steak house, but is it really that much better than buying high quality steaks from a butcher and cooking them yourself?

I don't usually order steak in restaurants due to the silly mark up, but the prices at the London restaurants are truly eye watering! Really not sure if i could justify the cost given that even very high quality steak from a top butchers costs a fraction of what a restaurant would charge.

Always had a good steak at Boisdale, across the road from Liverpool Street Stn, next to Dirty Dicks. For Roast Beef, and an historic restaurant, Simpsons on the Strand

Rib Room at the Jumeirah does an above average steak, especially when on the Toptable offer at £25 for steak, trimmings and a glass of Malbec. Service is also impeccable!

Quite. £50 a kilo round here and since when did anything in good restaurant compare to buying at a butchers .

Goodmans steaks are around £35 per unless you go mad on half a cow. It's excellent

You *could* dry age the steak some more at home. And then if your grill is hot enough you could probably do something similar.

But charcoal Josper grill meat that has been well aged is rather good. It would be hard to do at home.

At home I briefly sear the meat as hot as I can then put into a low temperature oven with a thermometer until it reaches the required temperature.

I thought New Street Grill was up there, but maybe not quite the same dedication to the steak as Goodman.

Relaise de Venise is also a favourite, but not quite the same thing.
