We visited one of their restaurants - the pizza I chose was lovely, really tasty.

A Pizza Hut 'delivery and take-away only' shop has recently opened so I gave it a go - It was NASTY.
A restaurant pizza freshly cooked and on your table within 30 seconds of being out of the oven is always going to taste better than one that's been stuffed into a bag and delivered luke warm 20 minutes later by a Rossi type moped rider who got his knee down at every corner.

Best pizza I've had is from Sentino's in Quinton (near Birmingham).

Found pizza hut have just gone downhill over the past decade, the base becomes more cardboard like and the toppings are devoid of flavour. A shame as I used to enjoy them!

Our local Indian takeaway does pizzas that are far superior and far cheaper than the junk turned out by Pizza Hut and Dominos.biggrin
Yup, local takeout every time. The advantages are huge, the best being that we know them so well by now that free drinks/sides are common.
Exactly. Whenever we get a pizza, we get a garlic nan on the side instead of garlic bread. Invariably, it arrives with a huge free bag of vegetable pakora and dip as well thumbuplick

A mate of mine was doing deliveries for a Pizza hut takeaway shop. All the pizza's they have are all frozen to order rather than freshly prepared in store/restaurant so this could have something to do with it.
They must have a massive freezer to store the many, many variables they could be asked for.

My local Pizza Hut is always spot on and delivers the food hot. My local Dominoes is dire in my opinion.

Last week I bough some pizza bas flour mix from aldi, some tomato paste, some grated Mozzarella, some charitso, salami, and added some left over mushrooms, some bacon, pepper and garlic. And I made in 30 mins 3 massive pizzas which cost about £6. I cut one up and took it to work the next day, and the other spare, was shared by my wife and her sister for lunch. I'm not saying I don't occasionally like a takeway pizza, but I can do better (IMHO)

I worked in a Pizza hut takeaway and can tell you that it is only the dough that is frozen. It is then placed into each individual pizza tin and placed into a refrigerator to defrost. Then, as each order is placed, the dough is kneaded into the size of the tin / pizza that required and then toppings are applied.

I wasn't a fan of the amount of oil used in the base of the tin to prevent sticking (there's a set amount per size of pizza that is "administered" via a pump) and always felt that it was this that caused greasy pizzas. This isn't an issue at Dominos as the pizza dough is stretched over a rack / metal disc and doesn't have any oil applied.

(F*ck me, I am a boring b@stard)

No they're not. The dough arrives frozen in bulk, but the pizzas are made there and then.

Jeez just had a look at the menu, makes the Kebabb shop takeaway pizzas look like a complete bargain.

My standard faire these days are aldi frozen pizzas with extras added as per what's needing eating out of the fridge.

I don't eat pizzas much, but when out for the day in another city we indulge in a pizza hut and they're very nice.

We don't have a Hut here but have a Dominos ....not keen, however there is a local one 'Hollywood Pizza' that's spot on.....and they deliver.

Sounds like you were very lucky with your dining in experience. As others have said, seek out a local place and hope they can maintain the quality/not get too big, Franco Manca was brilliant a year ago, quality of the pizza, as well as generosity of topping and standard of service have really deteriorated since then in my experience.

Dominos are ste. Salty, greasy and way overpriced. They also keep shoving leaflets through my door but won't deliver here (even if I did like them).

Pizza Hut - can't comment on them as never tried their takeaways. Had their buffet lunches a few times though when out shopping and they've been acceptable but not superb.

I don't have takeaway pizza very often but when I do it's from my local independent Chicago Pizza. They deliver, they're tasty, and cheaper. I'm also helping out a local business so get satisfaction from it too.

I do think that restaurant AND takeaway pizzas are overpriced for what they are though.

Which branch? Have you tried either of the Pizza Pilgrims branches?

Balham, was really good when it opened but last few times I've been it's really disappointed. Slightly burnt bases, a couple of slices of tiny chorizo on what's meant to be a meat pizza, extra toppings forgotten then delivered separately in a bowl and still charged for, specials not crossed off the board when they're unavailable etc. Honest Italian round the corner is much better, if a bit pricier and with a quieter atmosphere.

Been to the Soho Branch of Pizza Pilgrims a couple of times before, always been a bit of a hit and run meal, sitting in the window rather than downstairs, but the pizza is really nice. Good, friendly customer service as well, I'd ordered a beer which didn't arrive for some reason or other, and ended up with a nicer more expensive beer totally free.
