Volupte Lounge.

Probably not the best option to take mum though.

Claridges. The best tea I've ever drunk and just superb sandwiches and cakes that just kept on coming. Expensive but the wife and I could barely walk when we left. Actually great value!!

Did The Criterion yesterday. Not bad at all. Not nearly as good as Claridges but a much lower price point to be fair. And The Criterion is lovely inside.

Did they do refills, or just one plate?

depends whether you want tradition or modern. Dorchester for the former is v good, but there are a number of places that do 're-imagined' afternoon tea that's quite enjoyable.

I don't intend this to sound flippant but never having done "afternoon tea" does it tend to be anything particularly sophisticated or is it mostly people who have travelled in specially and are basically stuffing themselves because having paid £50-60 they want their moneys worth?

depends where you go. It's inherently 'sophisticated' in places like the Dorchester because that's what that place is about, and it's part of the experience. The sort of place where even if you aren't told you need to wear a jacket, you probably would feel better if you do. However yes if you go to Harrods on the other hand, then yes fat fkers in tracksuits shovelling butties into their faces. Same price though, ish.

Mad Hatters afternoon tea at the Sanderson is pretty good, the wife was bought it for her 40th last year.

Not London but we had afternoon tea in the Pump Room in Bath, it was crap and so not worth the money.

not a review site, but you can't rely on reviews anyway! You can get a fair idea from the listings.

I've done the Ritz a few times.

As someone asked above, primarily it's a venue for people to celebrate a special occasion.

Ladies of a certain age up from the Home Counties, daughters treating there mum, son treating parents (me) plus tourists and people who think by paying £50 it entitles them to tell everybody they've been to the Ritz.

It is very nice. You need to book well in advance, sometimes months and although you get a time slot within reason you can come and go as you please.

Additionally you can eat a lot! The sarnie a keep coming if you have no shame and a decent appetite.

Dress code is strict, jacket and tie is a must and ladies make an effort that adds to the occasion.

Having said that it's a relaxed affair in a lovely setting where you feel special.

Plus you are on the doorstep of great shopping and more.

I wouldn't personally go to the Ritz for Afternoon Tea as the whole jacket and tie thing is just not for me, I can appreciate why there is that particular dress code, however I want to be comfortable when I eat.

That's fair enough though I would say it doesn't feel stuffy and old fashioned, there are plenty of other nice places to go where you don't have to dress that way.

It's their tradition and I think even if you are a celeb ( or think you are) you have to comply.

Personally I don't feel uncomfortable in a jacket, and afternoon tea is kind of a special occasion thing for me, but whatever makes you happy.
