A really nice informal choice is afternoon team in Liberty's. You don't book and the food is excellent. It's a lot cheaper than the places mentioned above (which are lovely) and you don't get as much space as they give you nor the free additional sandwiches, cakes etc. But it is really nice.

Had afternoon tea today as it happens, well, not a set tea but along those lines.

It was at the Original Maids of Honour in Kew near Richmond. Not too difficult to park and although I'd not booked the very pleasant waitress seated us right in the window. They got very busy around 2 pm but the service was still fine.

The place itself really is from a bygone age and I suppose if you are honest not in a good way and yet due to its location and reputation it doesn't seem to matter as they were doing a decent trade inside, outside and with people collecting.

I enjoyed a baguette and huge pot of tea with a superb chocolate and cream pastry to follow and partner tucked into a freshly cooked steak pie, pot of Lady Grey with lemon and honey and a cranberry cheesecake to finish.

All very tasty, oh and we also had a Maid of honour tart.

They do some excellent set teas too.

Total bill £28 .

As a PH bonus the owners 997 Carrera was parked outside, registration P45TRY

so... high tea... is that basically a meal followed by afternoon tea or what, because that sounds awesome.

I think high tea is lots of sandwiches, then scones and cakes perhaps done Quiche all washed down with lots of tea. Normally eaten at 4 in the afternoon.

I'm going to start a new thread about changing eating habits because it's quite interesting how these things have evolved in not a long time.

sounds like afternoon tea to me! Just did a check online, and apparently:

English High Tea usually involved a mug of tea, bread, vegetables, cheese and occasionally meat. Variations on high tea could include the addition of pies, potatoes and crackers.

just sounds like the sort of lunch we usually have at the Mothers' houses!
