I am a local so have some experience with restaurants. The most important piece of advice I can give is take advantage of the lunch menu! A place that will cost you hundreds in the evening will cost you $30 in the afternoon. I have eaten at Jean Georges multiple times on the recommendation of Pistonheads. It is excellent. Nougatine is in the same location and more causal than JG who "suggest" wearing a jacket. But is very good still. JG is the type of place where you see the course size and get concerned you will leave hungry. The food does seem to keep on coming and you do not leave hungry though.
Balthazar is a place I take my mother to when she visits. The food is not the best but its a good experience. They had a sister restaurant in meat packing called Pastis. This was closed for building renovations. I always preferred to eat in Balthazar and drink in Pastis. The best seafood is at Aquagrill in Soho near Balthazar
Not been to Spice market or Budakan for ages so can't comment on their current food but back 6 years they were good. I have only been to Morrimotto once and was sick as a dog so couldn't taste the food. One of my favourite recommendations is Bouley for lunch. Get the fixed price and it is the bargain of the city. It is also close to Bubble lounge for Champagne afterwards. I like Mr Chows for Chinese but he downtown location. More relaxed than the other place. Wolfgang's for steak, the one closer to Empire State building (I have not been to Lugers though). It's the original location. Better than the Time Square one. Sushi should be done at Yasuda. Even though the head chef has now left and returned to Japan the food is excellent. Get Omakase at the bar and let your voyage begin. Best sushi I have had by far even in cluding Nobu whci was underwhelming. Le Bernadin was excellent and lunch was reasonably priced and conveniently located to my Wife's office. Gramercy Tavern was good but I found the lunch selection limited.
Hi, sorry for the late response to my thread, I had a great time in NY. We ate at a couple of great places. Firstly Balthazar for breakfast which was great but a bit surreal as its just like a French bistro. We found another wonderful local breakfast place called Cupping room café that I thought was better than Balthazar. We had a couple of steaks, one from wolfgangs and one at "strip house". Wolfgangs was over rated but the Strip house was excellent.
Dined at Eleven Madison Park, last Wednesday and i have to say blown away with the servicve and food. The Restaurant is a little cold and boring looking but I came here for flavour and that there was a lot. I think the course I was really liked was Radish with Pike and Roe, presentation was beautiful and the flavours sensational. The Carrot course was fun and good to speak to the chefs. I wasnt keen on the Whey but then i don't like anything much milk which to be fair I should have told them as they asked at begining of service of any dislikes! The house Apple Brandy is left on the table so indulge as much as you want, I have to admit I drank a bit too much and looking back at the photos was definetly a little rocky on the way back to Times Square
My wife doesnt drink much so the glass of Sparkling Ponte and a fabulous Nebbiolo with our Veal was enough, i went for Tasting wines which ultimatly is best value as buying by the bottle is expensive and time consuming, the list is huge, too much so i would say.
It wasnt cheap but then it was less than expected, $672.85 + left $100 tip about as much as I spent at Gidleigh Park late last year.
I managed to get a table at the time i wanted no problem by phoning 28 days in advance, I would say you may struggle on a friday or Saturday.
