Within industrial manufacturing (food, natch) we allow half of the remaining time after removing from freezing. That is at a maximum freezer temp of -23.

I've always followed my nose when it comes to stuff like this but surely if its frozen you'd just get the chicken out the night before you wanted you use it?

According to the USA food standards there are three ways to thaw chicken: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave. They say never to thaw chicken on the counter or in other locations (which is what i do and i've never had any issues).

They recommend the fridge method but say pretty much all chicken parts may take 1 to 2 days or longer to thaw. Once the raw chicken thaws, it can be kept in the refrigerator an additional day or two before cooking. during this time, if chicken thawed in the refrigerator is not used, it can safely be refrozen without cooking it first.

I would never refreeze chicken if it had previously been frozen but so long as you buy it pre-expiry date and freeze it before it goes out of date you wont have any problems with it (supposing you have taken it out within 9 months (US food standards recommended time for keeping chicken frozen), of purchase.

I always go to makro for my chicken and beef and every so often they have chicken and duck going cheap because it goes out of date the next day so i just make sure i freeze it as soon as i get home and its always perfect!

Aye, just done this myself (well I used a wooden rolling pin but, the theory wink)

It'll keep for 2/3 days in the fridge. Your nose will tell you if its ok or not

But if you're not going to use it & can't get it apart... Cook what you don't use, leave to cool & chuck it back in the freezer smile

Going 'quack' surely? getmecoat

I just take it out in the morning before I leave for work; stick it on a plate (still sealed in its packaging) on the kitchen worktop. Thawing it in a microwave just seems wrong to me.
