Agreed!
+1

And triple fried chips are a sign that you have been watching too much of Heston on the telly!

I've previously owned one but didn't use it much so got dumped or given away. I think the main hassle for me was the expense of changing the oil and filters every few weeks.
I'm interested in getting an air fryer though after reading the comments here.

Agreed.

We don't really do chips any more, we do roasties in the oven instead especially since I got better at them.

Ours was more hassle than it was worth, hasn't been used in years.

For great chips now we do home made crinkle cuts, part boiled for a bit, then covered in goose fat and cooked in the oven. lick

they are brilliant for proper chips but are messy and stink the kitchen out.

After about 10 years without one, I bought a cheap one from tesco and went on a chip diet for about a month. Threw it out for my own health and that of the kitchen.

I'm sure i've seen pics on here of a PH'er who keeps his in the garage.

We still have an old-fashioned chip-pan. Worth it for the look of sheer terror on everyone's face when it comes out. Plus, the longer you use the oil the more flavour it gives to whatever you're cooking lickhehe

(Yes, we also have a fire blanket to hand. Never needed it yet!)

Mine gets used maybe once every couple of months. Not so much for chips, mainly scotch eggs. It's nice to have it, but it does stink the kitchen out so I set up in the garage for frying.

Got one for Christmas; so far chips, crispy chili beef, buffalo wings, Estonian garlic bread. Thinking about cheese at the weekend.

Ours is in the cupboard with the juicer, bread maker, George Foreman and various other gimmicky ste.
Clearly everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a gimmick; our George Foreman get used daily. In fact, we bought a larger one a couple of months ago, having owned our old one for several years.

I've been contemplating a deep fryer but I just know it's not good for my health.

Mine iives in the garage, on the odd occaision it gets used it stops it stinking the house up, seems a no-brainer to me.

I haven't posted pictures of it on the internet though hehe

Must admit, ours only sees light when french fries are on the menu.

I'm liking the idea of these home cooked scotch eggs though. I'll have to suggest it to the missus.

deep frying gets too much of a bad rep. If you cook it at the right temp the food wont absorb too much of the oil. just make sure you drain it properly afterwards.

My problem with a deep fat fryer is the amount of oil you have to use, which is wasted unless you use the fryer regularly.

I find that McCain Gorgeous Oven Chips, although a little more expensive than normal chips, are actually better than sunflower oil deep fried chips. Can't beat a bit of beef dripping!

Might be me silly

I use mine outside in the summer when I'm BBQ'ing so I can feed the troops all day.

Proper chips, chicken strips, onion rings and mushrooms etc.

We regularly use every single kitchen gadget we own, including the George Foreman, slow cooker, food processor, hand blender, and many other small things.

Except the deep fat fryer. We've had it at least a year and haven't used it once. Make of that what you will.

I've tried deep fat fryers twice, and given up on them twice. Had never thought of using them in the garage mind....

Basically, I found them smelly , an absolute pain to clean, and generally a bloody nuisance.

These days I use a pan and a clip on thermometer, it does the trick. Having said that, I rarely fry stuff, says something I suppose.

On a more positive note, that airfryer does sound very interesting, don't think I'd get the use out of it though. Looks like I'm a lost cause when it comes to fryers.

Thanks guys, you've pretty much summed up what I was expecting, although they may do good chips the smell, cost and faff of cleaning means it would be a short lived fad. I've survived the last 10years without one and as tempting as the scotch eggs look I'll give buying a new one a miss.
