Another vote for The Cornish Arms (Steins pub).

This spot is pretty good; http://www.raffertyscafewinebar.co.uk - in St Merryn

We had a lovely meal at the Beach Hut cafe which is directly below JO's restaurant at Watergate bay.

It seems to get mixed reviews but we also had a fantastic lunch at the Seafood restaurant.
We stay at watergate bay every year and the beach hut is very good. The hotel itself is very nice too. Good bar and terraces

I'm down in Padstow for the weekend so I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring with dining experiences so far.

We ate at Burgers & Fish on Friday night, following the recommendation on this thread; it was very good.

The Matador burger was excellent, as were the 'posh fries' (with truffle) and some very good beers are available too.

Yesterday was an early light breakfast at Oliver's Fifteen in Watergate Bay followed by lunch in the afternoon at No.6.

Absolutely fantastic is the only way to describe No.6

I thought the A la Carte menu was great with some really interesting dishes. Most of us ended up having beef, which was truly sublime. A couple of us shared the Fairground Tale to finish and that is highly recommended too. I have honestly never had a better meal than I had yesterday at No.6. The rest our small party were blown away by it too.

The Gins are very good too, I think we tried most of them between 4 of us, and are served with well chosen garnishes.

The bill was in the region of £80 per head for mains, dessert and a few drinks.

All in all highly recommended and I'm now expected Stein's Seafood Restaurant to be a let down tonight...

Nice review.

Stein's seafood is very different to No.6 a lot less intimate in the dining experience and more traditional dishes and also well known recipes from his travels around the world on TV. I still enjoyed it but don't go expecting the fine Michelin dining at No.6 despite paying a similar price or more.

If you order the Singapore chilli crab ask for a bib as it's very messy but worth it. Have fun.

Thanks - I wish I'd read your post before we visited Stein's so that I could have lowered my expectations after No.6.

You were absolutely spot on with the comment about it being less intimate. I don't like waiting staff to be too obtrusive but it felt like it was a little bit too impersonal to me, really.

Some of the food was very good - great quality lobster and the sashimi with freshly made wasabi (and the small glass of saki I ordered to accompany it) was excellent. On the downside a couple of our party had an iberico ham starter which I think was just a step too far in terms of poor value for money. I know it was decent quality stuff but there was very, very little of it and it was served with just a couple of slices of sour dough which didn't help the impression of cost v value as it came across as being just the most expensive ham sandwich I'd ever seen.

Another person has the hake and chips (basically fish and chips, which is fine as that was what was expected) and that wasn't great either. With the batter being under cooked and a little 'slimy' against the fish. Once more not terrible by any means, perhaps just not as good as one would hope for from supposedly one of best fish restaurants there is.

All in all, not bad at between £70 and £100 per head with a couple of drinks but not a patch on No.6, if just looking at what's avaiable in Padstow.

So I would say yes, it's somewhere I'd recommend trying for anyone who is going to be visiting the area for a while and will be doing several restaurants over that time but I won't be going back and for anyone just wanting one meal out at a decent restaurant in the area it wouldn't be at the top of my list. I think that's a fair summary.

No worries, I would personally stick to the seafood and fish when visiting Stein's as that is what it is known for but shame the fish and chips weren't up to scratch.

If you go down again then one of Nathan Outlaw's places is well worth a visit if you prefer a finer fish and seafood dining experience but the portions are smaller than Stein's.

I managed to get a last minute booking at Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac a few weeks ago (I think they moved there only in March), and it was fantastic. We had the tasting menu with matched wines and were not disappointed.

The Weather kindly played along too, and we were treated to an amazing sunset! Not cheap, but certainly worth it.
