Was planning on using a coffee filter; they look a little too fine for the sieve.

Even better, should be decent.

If I did it again I'd try to add more citrus flavours.

And, after a complicated and protracted process, we have Gin.

Given the nature of the product, I feel it will benefit from an equally protracted aging.

So I'll give it a go later this evening.

Having seen this thread before Xmas, and enjoying the odd G&T myself, I asked my wife for a bottle of "something different" in terms of gin. Bearing in mind I've only really ever had standard stuff before and never anything I would consider premium (usually have blue sapphire and std tanqueray in the house)

She came up with this, which I do like although I haven't tried it with red apple yet...

I fear the beginnings of a little collection :-)

Interesting, must see if I can acquire a bottle of that.

Update on the homemade gin - I tried it both strained through a metal coffee filter (from a coffee maker), and through a paper filter, a couple of days later.

The metal filter results were 'bearable'.

However, the paper filter was a marked improvement, removing a lot of the harshness(and a lot of sediment), and making it quite palatable. Certainly better than some gins I've had, even some quite expensive ones (US small batch gin is very hit and miss).

I think I'd halve the amount of botanicals next time, but certainly worth repeating.

I opened the bottle of Botanist last night, genuinely felt disappointed after some of the reviews of it here. Still yet to taste a gin that is nicer than Monkey 47.

Yesterday I bought a bottle of Bombay Dry Gin, not Saphirre, the clear bottle.
Oddly the 1l. bottle was €11.29 but the 700ml bottle was €11.90. wobble

I also picked up a bottle of Gabriel Boudier Saffron Gin, made in Dijon. Looks like a sample from someone with a kidney problem! laugh
(That's about €17 here)

Acquired another bottle of Beefeater 24 when the family came over to visit.

While it gets poor reviews online, I find it one of the few premium gins I'd actually go out of my way to purchase.

Subtly different taste and very neckable.

Another random obscure local one:

Really good actually. Has displaced Plymouth as our standard...

Isle of Harris gin. Stunning! The distillery has just laid down its first whiskey casks too.

Bulldog Gin.

I'd not tried it before, so poured some neat into a glass to see which tonic would be best with it.
It blew me fookin' head off! Genuinley surprised me! It got Schweppes on this occasion. paperbag

I picked up a bottled of Bulldog a few months back in duty free and you're right, I wasn't expecting much from the tacky looking bottle but it really is a decent gin. I think I got 1ltr bottle for eighteen quid. I actually prefer that to the bottle of The Botanist I've currently got going.

Visiting Lewis at the end of April, and have just put that on the souvenir list.

I almost got my first bottle of the botanist in Stornoway a few years back. After failing to see it anywhere on the road trip up, I spotted it in the filling station on Matheson Road of all places, but sadly it was 10:05 pm so I wasn't allowed.

Out in deepest rural Spain at the moment and this was all the local supermarket had, surprisingly pleasant with a large slice and tonic. Only 11 euro for a litre too.....

Have a couple of bottles of this hanging about. Bring a bottle back each time I go out to Lanzarote. Last time I paid 7 euro for 1L. I like it.
Been up to the Highlands recently and tried a few. The Harris gin was the stand out. The most disappointing was The Botanist.

That looks lush. May I ask what the garnish is?

Thank you tuffer, I shall give that a go.

Incidentally, where do you chaps source some of these harder to get gins? I was after a bottle of Monkey 47 so got talking to the owner of a specialist shop (admittedly his expertise was in whisky but did have a selection of gins) near me. He said he used to stock it but alas no longer. He said it wasn't popular and the cost for only 50cl was prohibitive. He did recommend the Cotswolds gin so it was rude not to. Haven't tried it yet mind.

I throughly recommend a trip to Adnams (Southwold) to make your own using their still's. The base is Adnams vodka.

Here's a some pictures of my very herby but delicious concoction.

I have my recipe/reference card somewhere I'll post soon. I'm running low so would love to make another lol!
