Always.. you have to get a bit inventive sometimes with how you use the cheap ingredients though.

Do you have to prove you're poor to get the deals or what?

It was a genuine question! Is it like a kind of food bank or can anyone buy things from it? I saw they had one set up in the car park of a Tesco I was in yesterday. Not sure quite what's different though as they have always marked down things that are nearing date.

It's got nothing to do with Benefits.

These goods are "out of date" on that day so they can't sell them the following day. You'll therefore get the best bargains in the evening. It means your dinner could be unusual. I've had some special fried rice thing followed by an Italian beef stew thing and and some kind of strawberry dessert. Total cost about £1.

Waitrose are the best by far. None of this gradual reduction like at Tesco, just a massive 'whollop!!!' off the price straight away.

So what? You don't have to behave like you're on benefits.

I heard it was because of the way some buy one get one free offers work, they deduct the price of the meal at the end of the checkout, so a few of them in the system deducted the full price from the discounted price, giving a negative total.
I've had this work for me smile

Most supermarkets cottoned on to this a while back and reprogrammed their systems. I did onceanage to complete a shop with around four carrier bags full of food, and a newspaper, the cashier was quite dumbfounded when he said he owed me 14p...

I shop regularly like this. Sometimes £4 a week will feed a family of three including pack ups. My kids enjoy deli sandwiches almost daily, along with pastries and other bakery products, cooked meats etc. Some of their school 'friends' teased them about their 'yellow sticker' lunches - but my sons said they we're proud of my savvy shopping as they get to dine finely while other kids get boring pack ups.

There's can be quite some skill involved. And their are always the regular ninjas who I curse when I spot them parked up before me. The bearded chap with the white pick up and the old Triumph motorbike is on my list...

Through some fortune I also have access to a discount with a particular supermarket too - an extra 2p off a 10p cooked chicken or fresh Lobster Tail makes me smile every time.

It always astounds and disgusts me how much food is thrown away in this country.

Absolutely. I remember watching a documentary featuring skip raiders. Supermarkets throwing out multipacks of crisps, chocolate etc because the main bag was split, and despite the contents being unaffected it wasn't allowed to be sold. I'm not sure I'd go as far as rummaging Waitrose and Iceland skips at 3am, but I have seen it happen in reality too.

Do supermarkets really have to spoil food, for fear of being sued?

Yes, those living rough on the street desperately need cheaper crisps.
