so the only new thing about this is that they take all the reduced stuff and sell it in the car park, rather than around the shop on the shelves... groundbreaking.

I may have taken the label off before I got home....
My wife would have been gutted if I'd taken the whoops price off the flowers I bought. Half a dozen bunches of daffodils should have been £1.50 each, spotted at 10p each.

If she thought I'd thrown away money buying flowers, I'd have been bked. Happy with savvy discount shopping though.

It always astounds and disgusts me how much food is thrown away in this country.
Absolutely. I remember watching a documentary featuring skip raiders. Supermarkets throwing out multipacks of crisps, chocolate etc because the main bag was split, and despite the contents being unaffected it wasn't allowed to be sold. I'm not sure I'd go as far as rummaging Waitrose and Iceland skips at 3am, but I have seen it happen in reality too.
Do supermarkets really have to spoil food, for fear of being sued?
I believe there is a legal element attached and to get round it isn't easy. The logistics of giving the food away would be far from easy - retailers wouldn't want the cost or planning of the reverse logistics of getting food back from stores and then redistributed elsewhere.

If you think what the retailers throw away, you'd be even more horrified at how much some manufacturers throw away.

We have similar at work where it is clearly cheaper/easier to sell stuff cheap that is approaching its sell by date rather than have to pay to throw it away.

Not fresh food but chemicals which is then classed as hazardous waste so v expensive to dispose of properly. Waste food will be classed as the same at some point.

If I got something for it then better than paying to throw it away - my garage is full of lubes (oo-er missus laugh) that are past their shelf life but fine to use.

Once picked up two decent fillet steaks from Asda for 49p each. Bargain. One for dinner banged the other in the freezer. Best deal I've had yet! They were pretty big too!

I don't want to give away all my secrets, but one is to look for the 'seasonal specials' that end up being reduced because they have a Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day theme, etc. Yankee Candles in department stores can be picked up with ridiculous reductions. Christmas box sets that retail normally around £30 I buy at around £5 just after the 'event'.

Bought this jewellery box of chocolates in April for around £1 because it was initially produced for Mother's Day - none of the packaging was specific though. Had them for my son's 21st.

When it comes to reductions, there is a bit of a knack to it. When I was younger, most of the larger supermarkets used to reduce much more stuff and much more heavily. There was a 'golden window' many years ago where we could go to our local Tesco and do *almost* all of the shopping on a reduced stuff. I remember once when we managed to fill a whole trolley for less than £20. My parents bought a large chest freezer for the shed, and filled it with 5p, 10p loaves and would do this very regularly.

Thesedays of course, people have copped on, as have the supermarkets in terms of waste management. Reductions also depends on the individual store, there doesn't seem to be a set pattern.

I like the fact that it can be anything sitting there ready to be snapped up by a passing tightwad!!
Lol!!!!

Our local co-op is actually pretty expensive compared to alternatives in the area. Can't say I've ever sampled their cut price selection so will keep an eye out,

I love it. I've had a good run recently of random but good reductions.

The other night I enjoyed a starter of duck pancakes with hoisin followed by a main course of beef casserole and lovely veg spring rolls for less than a quid all in.

Hahaha, the "Benefits Buffet"!

Just got a punnet each of raspberries, strawbs and grapes for 50p each, blended up over two litres of smoothies by adding two past their best bananas, stuck a litre in the fridge, added a big splash of vodka to the other and Stuck it in the freezer!

Also got some fresh not dried egg noodles for 25p!

We're living like Kings!

Co-op is great for this.
I would usually call in on my way home as I drive past one but alas no more.
It closed down and is now an Aldi. frown

Their stock control is/was one of the worst Ive known. My local one has upped it's game a bit recently (it may be after I dated the Manager and pointed a few things out. More fool me).

Still bargains to be had though. Picked this lot up since last night along with some other bread and pastries to stock the freezer. Plus I get 10% discount on top. Also bought some prepared bags of mixed salad to give to my chickens and ducks at 18p a bag. Woman in front of me was buying a bag for her dinner tonight at full price £1 odd...

I'm currently on "gardening leave" and by turning up at my local Sainsbury's at 4-5pm I pick up some amazing things....and have fun creating a meal for the family in the process....
Recent highlights;

Lamb Liver for 14p
Dover sole for 54p
Sea Bass £1.12
More crumpets than I can count at 15p
Aged Parmesan at £10 a kilo
Chilli marinated olives at £1 a large tub.

The only question is why the mrs is too busy to do the same when I am at workrolleyes

Not sure how you'd work the liver into that recipe though...

When I worked in Sainsburys for a few years we had the same bloke come in every day and pester us to reduce things. Was a regular thing. If SWMBO goes into our local co-op at the right time when her friend is doing the reductions (odd how she always knows), the reductions can be 'better' than if she wasnt there...

Wastage is a great thing too, out the back there was a trolley full of damaged stuff, normally multipacks with 1 thing broken. At the end of the day it was all scanned in and written off, then binned. Well, it went to be binned, then found its way into various people's bags. When I joined it was pretty much an unwritten rule.

One night a cardboard stand full of coors lite (when it was first released) fell down, smashing a few bottles. The whole lot was written off as the labels went all smeggy. Because I was in early, I was tasked with clearing it up. All the good bottles went into seperate bags, which I then placed very carefully in a rarely used bin outside. After my shift, I may have gone round and retreived the bag, took them all home, rinsed them off to get the glass and spilt beer off and didnt have to buy any beer for a whole summer! Was a good 50-60 bottles (god knows why someone thought a cardboard stand was ok enough for all that weight...)

Came to a head when someone wrote off a mis-delivered crate of cheese, which then went walkies, and the person got sacked for gross misconduct. We had a new store manager by that point though.

We had Pizza the other night, and SWMBO spied a 14" ham and pineapple for £1.12 in the reduced. Saved us a fair bit as 2 pizzas and garlic bread from Asda normalyl costs the thick end of £7. I coated my bit in Franks red hot sauce and it was lovely!

I wonder if anyone like me looks at some of the stuff on there and thinks 'i'm not surprised'?
I'm not really attracted to a pizza when it's called a 'Sloppy Giuseppe' and they make it to these shelves quite often, the area around the supermarket is largely Muslim so a lot of pork ends up on there too.
For some reason there have been a lot of Pizza bases marked down lately, when you can buy a pizza ready made for a pound or two more (on the knock down shelf) this doesn't surprize me either - I can buy one of these then spec it up a bit with the other stuff on the same shelf for less than a takeaway pizza and it's generally better...
