I'm a TGI fan. Hardly cheap but always very tasty. The chains are getting better. Even Frankie and Benny's has improved hugely over the last few years.

Loch Fyne.

Someone is trying to subject me to a Harvester next week, i'm not looking forward to eating that st that's for sure.
Loch Fyne is the only chain that I have been to in a long time

I always eat at independents or cook myself.
Another vote for Loch Fyne. They have a good set menu, good service but my local one lacks atmosphere.

Prezzo is a pretty good pizzeria

Nothing wrong with a free salad bar...... that kids and adults cough and sneeze over, stale bread rolls, kids putting stuff back after they have tasted it......

I don't have much choice when working away from home and that is the nearest option to the hotel. Never have the steak there.

My local Ma Potter's became Cafe Rouge.

Never heard of most of these places, I don't think they venture this far west.
Only chain restaurants here (other the McD and KFC) are Pizza Express and Presto, both of which are bearable but not great

Cote - good
Wagamama - really gone down hill, such a shame
Byron burger - excellent
Nandos - good for what it is
TGI - dont like it, too many balloons and people singing happy birthday
Prezzo - gone down hill, used to be good
Pizza express - really good standard of pizza

I think I would have to agree with Wagamama. Been eating the food from there for almost 20 years. Its the same everywhere you go, its always high quality, cooked fresh and reasonable value. Menu is almost unchanged in that time. Chicken Katsu Curry... every time!!

TGIs would be a close second - although it depends on branch as some are better than others. Our local is pretty good. Gets really busy though and sometimes gets a few undesirables in esp on Fri / Sat night.

Frankie and Bennys was good until 3-4 years ago when the menu seemed to start to get smaller and portions and quality fell. They also removed the herb potato from the breakfasts and we stopped going. Used to go for breki on a Sunday a few times a year.
The menu has subtly changed. The Yaki Soba was originally dairy free, then a year or so ago the allergens listing put it in the dairy list, and now it's dairy free again. I sense the corporate hand at work. The chain has changed hands a few times since 1992. I like it still, though. The food is always freshly made and tasty.

Frankie and Benny's and Chiquito's right next door to each other here in Colchester with a Harvester around the back and a Toby Carvery within spitting distance.

I avoid F&B like the plague.

The food at F + B can be OK, but the NOISE! At about 7PM they deliberately turn the music up to above the pain threshold, nobody knows why.

I find TGI OK for food but the happy clappy birthday stuff is a bit cringing. Big whoop, I stood on a chair and shouted my name out.

Wagamama I like but they are light on the meat in the main dishes but then it is a noodle bar.

Cafe Rouge is OK for a no brainer menu.

Jamies I think has gone expensive and off the boil with the menu.

Usual cheap pub chains I only suffer when working away, not through personal choice. Never ever have the steak and never expect it all to be consistent.

Ruby Tuesday is not bad for stuffing your face with fried food.

Pizza Express is OK, fresh cooked at least.

I would go for Wagamama overall.

Do either of you like Yo Sushi? A couple of my friends go for lunch at least once a week and spend £25 easily per person and I just don't "get" the place! Pretty sure they charged me for a glass so I could drink tap water at the one in Reading.

I've eaten 3 times at Loch Fyne. First time was a disaster, utterly terrible service and quality, vowed never to go back.
Then my firm booked it for a do. It was even worse. Truly shocking. loads of us complained. That was me done.
Then I was entertaining a client and he said, as there was a Loch Fyne nearby, we should go. I advised against it, saying I'd been twice and it was beyond bad. But he said I was nuts, and it was always great, so we went.
It was fking dreadful. Bad beyond words. Fish was tiny and overcooked, veg was undercooked, and I had cheese and biscuits for dessert and the cheese was sliced so thin I swear you could hold it up to the light and see thru it.

I will never set foot in there again. I'd rather go hungry than have it as my pre execution meal.

Beaconsfield branch, if anyone is interested. Avoid like the plague.

Loch Fyne do choose their locations well though, it took me ages to twig they were a chain.

Loch Fyne has also promoted itself onto our "will never darken their doors again" list. Terrible over a couple of visits and then the last one included a sturdy dose of food poisoning for the wife.

Burger Lobster is the wifes current chain of choice.

Never been there despite (or perhaps because) I am a fan of (good) sushi and sashimi. Yo Sushi! had a terrible report from the food inspectors at one time so perhaps that had a subtle discouragement effect? Hygiene is obviously critical with that kind of cuisine above all others.

I don't dislike it but I would rather go to Wagamama. For sushi I would probably go to an indi rather than a chain. Its not cheap though but its one of the foods where quality is a priority IMHO.

Burger & Lobster is a good novelty place, I take my mum and dad there a few times a year but I've never had lobster anywhere else so I'm not sure how good it is in comparison to a proper place.

Loch Fyne near me is also atrocious. An ex of mine worked there and they were on bonuses to sell the specials as they were about to go out of date. Not sure if that's standard practice?

Really like Cote.

TGI used to be decent but is now average at best.

My local Du Vin was great a few years ago but the standard of service is so poor now that it's virtually empty most nights.

My mrs loves CAU. It's decent but the interior is garish.
