Didn't know where to put this but as the onus is on the quality of the cooking rather than the TV aspect, I thought here was best.

I quite like the format they use as it's a bit less formal than the UK but the quality of the cooks has never really matched up. However, this season was immense. Some of the food they were putting out was world class at times. Hugely creative and often brilliantly executed.

As a measure, the last round of the finals was a Heston Blumenthal 'Pressure Test' where they had to re-create a dish he had devised just for the show - it was crazy, absolutely crazy.

Lets just say that when the winner was announced he instantly offered the winner a job at the Fat Duck.

One of the others was told by Marco Pierre White that he'd happily employ him.

The quality from the amateur chefs was awesome at times and the winner was just a machine.

I've not mentioned the winner by name etc... in case you want to catch up with the show. It was brilliant to watch from a foody point of view.

No doubt - he was outstanding.

I have to say, the ideas some of them came up with, and absolutely nailed, were so creative. Many a time the Wife and I said to each other, 'How the hell did they come up with that!'. Brilliant stuff. Lot's of very young guys that are going to have successful food careers.

Show's like this irritate me.

I would love to know how many of these people actually end up working as proffesional chefs and sticking at it. It's not an easy job and it irks me and many a chef/ex chef I know. You're on your feet 15+ hours a day at a minimum and a lot of the time you take no breaks, you eat where you stand before service whilst you're prepping to get properly roasted for the evening.

I used to start at 6/7am and not finish until 1am the earliest, some nights you wouldn't bother going home and in my earlier days I slept many a night in the kitchen on a sack of spuds with the rest of the brigade and you'd do this 6 nights a week for a salary so out of tune with the hours you work it's fked up!

The fact that these people think they come into a world that is one of the last remaining places where political correctness does not exist and just think they can run a kitchen and create menu's grates on me. In this trade you earn respect with blood, burns, sweat, tears and even mental breakdowns, it's an extremely tough environment and is mentally exhausting especially when you start working at top end restaurants, the attention to detail kills you.

Chefs don't take kindly to this kind of thing and it's like a band of brothers when someone new comes in they take all the st and only after they've proved they are there for the team and can take the st they start to earn the respect.

Are these people prepared to realistically give up their lives for something that isn't very rewarding? You miss Christmas, Birthdays, Weddings, Summertime and any other events you'll be invited to, you'll work every weekend. It's a hard life and I take my hat off to anyone who can succeed and whilst I have recently retired my chef's knives for a job that allows me more social time with friends and family and a much better salary I do bloody miss the hard graft and buzz of a Saturday night service!

Sorry....Rant over biglaugh

These guys are not working as you would assume.

They get a book deal, $250k and lots of support to start up as a celeb chef.

So that will probably irritate you even more.

I agree for the most part, but only to a point. Those that stick at it and are successful will surely be putting the hours in and working damn hard to make things a success as any professional (in any business) is required to.

The winner of this show is young and has been offered an apprenticeship - she's not parachuting in as the Head Chef of a two star place jumping over everyone else.

Certainly not the deal they were offering UK MC the Pros' a few years back. I employed one of the runners up and he was pretty glad he hadn't won as the deal from the BBC meant he would have earned less money unless he actually made it as a celeb chef which he didn't want. He just wanted to win without being tied to a BBC contract for 12 months.

I had a pretty relaxed "career" in the kitchen going from event and group catering for 8 years to restaurant for 3/4 and that was enough for me!

Like NordicCrankShaft I have also switched to something where I get home by 4/5 every day, get weekends and real holidays for first time I can remember.

OK, the money isn't as good but being able to spend the summer with kids, see my wife at weekend etc kind of makes up for it.

Have to say though, I'm 4 days into a 6 week holiday and I'm already bored and popped back into work this morning to defrost a freezer getmecoat

Anyone know if I can watch the AUS series online from the UK (or more likely Mallorca?)

yes... on laptop install tvmc (kodi for pc/mac/ipad,etc) and you will get everything, it will give you a program called genesis and that has all movies and episodes of everything.

try it and use search function for masterchef.

Nordic's point applies to all of these 'instant celebrity' type shows.

Music is the obvious one. There are many talents musicians out there slogging away writing, practicing, gigging for little or no reward and these shows come along and make it look easy. Learning half of one song a week is not hard. Very few of them make it after the cameras have stopped rolling. What annoys me the most is the one who say music is my life I love singing but have never been out on stage or in a band.

Mrs. DG3 and I, tried to watch this, gave up after four episodes, just too hyper. By comparison “My Kitchen Rules AUS” we really enjoy!
I’m not a bad hand in a kitchen, many friends say “DG3 you should open a restaurant” my answer “I wouldn’t last a night in a professional kitchen, much less run one”
MKR l watch, because we both like it, but in no way, do I take it seriously!

Which series is the latest one? I can see Sky has some of series 3, but I think the one being discussed here is quite a bit further down the road...

Series 7 is the latest one.

Of all the Masterchef series I think the one I like the most is the US version with GR running the show, AUS version is too long, UK is boring, US is about right.
