Would never imagine it would be this hard to find!

I'm after some (four) long flat skewers around 2 - 3cm wide that I can mould the mince around after marinating. The kind you find in the local kebab house would be ideal but even eBay sellers want £30 for them! I asked the local and they said they get their's in bulk and are quite expensive, for what they are made of how can they be that much laugh

Any suggestions!?!

Thanks,
Andy

They do seem to be quite expensive, best I could find are:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbe...

Maybe the local will lend them for some beer money?

Well, I just had a quick search and found these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schaschlikspiesse-1-5-mm-S...

To search further, look for Mangal skewers, or products to use on a Mangal.

I don't think those are 2-3cm wide. It looks like the dimensions they give are the packaging.

If you go to one of the Asian shops in Southall or Wembley they're about a pound and exactly what you're after...They also do the Cubed skewers for a quid!

There are the double skewers http://www.amazon.com/Elizabeth-Karmels-Double-Ske...

Webber also do some.

I opted for flat but was tempted to go for the doubles ones.

The secret of the flat skewers is that they're made from carbon steel - not stainless.

Carbon steel imparts flavour to the food, much like a well-seasoned wok once this has been in use for a while.

Southall / Wembley / Langley have to be the places to look. Or get a blacksmith to forge you some.

It's quite a specifically Turkish thing, so you won't find them in just any asian shop. Next time you're in London, go to the turkish supermarkets in Green Lanes or around Dalson/Stoke Newington. I bought some there; alu though so no dishwasher frown

Let us know how you get on. Are they mild steel, as advertised?

No idea, they're still wrapped up and I'm in the jungle in West Papua for another couple of weeks.
I have some kofte mix from sausagemaking.org so will have a stab at them straight away.
