I'm not obsessed with Michelin, but thought it would be nice to experience it. We have eaten nice food in a lot of places, so figured this was the next step.

I am a very fussy eater, but i am considering having something off the menu that I would never have considered, rather than my default steak

Maybe not quite what you had in mind, but Mrs T7 took me to the Hand & Flowers in Marlow for my birthday this year.

Id go again, great food, great atmosphere and not silly money either.
Agreed great food etc

- out of town : Le Manoir. Stay over if you can.
Assuming you're going to go for the tasting menu at Le Manoir (which I'd always recommend so that you get to try a wider variety of dishes) then, for 2 people, you're looking at £4-500 for dinner or 2 x £4-500 if you include the room as well.

Personally I'd rather have two separate visits for dinner and have the inconvenience of driving!
A party of 13 of us dined at Le Manoir about 2 years ago and it was quite simply one of the best places I have ever dined at.

When we arrived they gave us a Le Manoir teddy bear to sit with as it is apparently unlucky for 13 people to dine smile

All of us had the extended tasting menu with accompanying wines, and 8 of us stayed over the night.

It was absolutely terrific to say the least. I can't recommend it enough.

Thankfully my Dad was the one who paid the whole bill the next morning and not me biggrin

I live 100 miles from there, and whilst it's expensive the rooms are very nice and we also had afternoon tea. If the weather's good, a walk around the gardens is also lovely. And the almonds and sherry they provided with the room were pretty good too (despite me generally appreciating neither).

They also tend to have better availability if sir is staying IME smile

There are at least 4 'French' dishes on the menu at the Royal Oak and most of the puds, get them down your neck you'll love them all smile
I didn't want to mention that.

My wife thinks she is fussy but she isn't. If I don't tell her what she is eating she laps it up. It's often the idea of something rather than the actual flavour of the thing.

No mention of Dinner by Heston? I was there just before they got their second star - midweek lunch was relatively easy to get a table for and it was lovely. I preferred it to Castle Terrace in Edinburgh, which if I'm honest was slightly disappointing by comparison.

Avoid Marcus at the Berkeley. Easily the most disappointing Michelin starred meal I have eaten.

I dont think it is michelin starred but seems to be highly acclaimed looking at varuous reviews.

I have an upcoming private dining room booked and a group of us are goiing for the tasting menu.

Did Hand and Flowers on Monday. Very very very good food, but didn't blow us away, something missing but we couldnt quite put our finger on it. Not worth a year wait in our opinion.

Gauthier gained a star in 2011 but lost it in 2013.

I've been several times and highly recommend it. Great food and different atmosphere to your usual London top-end restaurants due to the Georgian building it sits in with smallish rooms and winding staircase...

All these people saying that ordering steak is a waste of time is missing the point a bit.

Sure, the diner might not appreciate the whole range of chef's skills, but there's the whole experience of eating at a top restaurant; the service, the wine & drinks, the starters & desserts, the sides, and possibly all the little bits in between the courses that makes a visit such a pleasure (even though, I believe, Michelin don't score on atmosphere or service quality?)

I'd be quite interested to have a steak cooked by the best chefs in the country, it would be an interesting benchmark to see how they approached it, how it was served, what it was served with.

Perhaps don't ask for ketchup with your chips, I think it was someone who got thrown out of Le Manoir for asking for it?!

Raymond's more of a "brown sauce" man, if you know what I mean. Nudge nudge, wink wink.

L'atelier by Joel Robuchon provided a complimentray dish of mashed potatoes to our table when we visited

They told us it is one of his signature dishes..

Initial thinking- how ridiculous that mash potato is the signature dish.

Mash potato is mash potato right.....

How wrong could I be - this was one of the most amazing dishes I have tasted. My OH said exactly the same and it was truly the one dish that really stood out when we visited even though the rest of the meal was amazing as well.

On the same basis people say steak can be cooked by anyone but i disagree - I'm pretty sure certain people can cook it better than others so no issue in people ordering steaks at michelin starred restaurants just as I would now make mash potato as my number one choice when visiting a chef that has one of the highest number ofmichellin stars atatched to his reataurants arond the world.

On another note I had steak a few weeks back at JW Steakhouse at Grovesnor House and it was poor and very disappointing - wont be going back there.

I went a couple of years ago, took my dad for his birthday. Private room for 6 of us all having the tasting menu, he thoroughly enjoyed himself and he's a moany bugger.
